Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I am a student at merced college. I am just about done with my nursing pre reqs. English is one of them and I have a C in the class. Would it be better to drop now and get a W or get the C in the class for the semester?

It depends on what your GPA is. A grade of C is passing, however if your GPA is already low and re-taking the class and earning an A will boost your GPA up, then I would consider re-taking it. However, if your GPA is already high and this one C will really not affect it at all, then I would leave it be. If you are getting ready to apply to nursing school anyways, and re-taking the class will delay that, then I would just leave it alone and apply. Really just depends on your situation (what's your GPA and when you plan on applying to nursing schools). The choice is ultimately up to you.

I've heard it's better to get the W than the C

I wouldnt be able to apply to Merced program until 2014 March since they only do it once a year now. But I would still be able to apply elswhere. Id have to wait until next fall to retake it because there are no more openings for spring semester. I do have a pretty low gpa because when I was fresh out of highschool I went to college not knowing the importance and I got a lot of d's and w's so now those hurt me and I am slowly pulling up my gpa.

I would make sure the nursing program you want allows you to take the class more than once. Even having a W is considered taking the class so even if you get an A next time it'll still count as a second try. Also did you take any other prerequisite classes more than once? Most placed will not allow you to repeat more than once in more than one prerequisite class. Definitely meet with an advisor/counselor to see what would be the best for you. And do your research (email or call) nursing programs you want to make sure repeating or dropping classes are okay. (:

Good luck!

There are classes that are required for graduation, but not admission (elections). Some students take those classes while waiting to get in. It can help boost your GPA and help ease the workload during nursing school. As said before, if you receive a C to you already low GPA, it will probably hurt your score. Definitely talk to an advisor.
