Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello,

I am currently taking my prerequisites for the nursing program at NWACC in NW Arkansas.

I am adding in some for the RN-BSN online degree so that while I am working after school I can finish those prereq's and then start in one the BSN.

My plan is to apply for the accelerated track which is 15months. The web site lists that they like to accept people that can speak English and Spanish, so I am taking a conversational Spanish class this semester and next to hopefully up my chances of getting in.

Right now my GPA is 3.3.

Would it be beneficial to have a medical terminology course completed before applying? It is a 1cr hr online course, but I am only taking it to "look better" right now for getting in nursing school.

By the way I am a male, so honestly does the fact that we are a minority change my chances any.

Thank you,

JT

It depends on your school. A lot of schools base their entrance on the classes you have taken and you get extra points for completing other required classes in addition to the pre-req's. Other schools don't pay any attention to what you have completed. They just make sure you finish the pre-req's. Call your school's nursing department and see what their entrance process is.

My school doesn't look at the extra classes you have taken, but I am taking Med. terminology this semester anyway. Why? Because I feel that it will only help me along the way. I will be a stronger student because of it. So it really is a personal choice, but call the nursing program and verify so you can make an educated decision.

Hey there...welcome to this awesome board with an unbelievable amount of information and support!!!

My school doesn't look at the extra classes either. It is not required that we take Med Term, but I don't think it would hurt by any means!!! I think it would certainly help in the long run!

Good luck!

I don't think being male decreases your chances at all. I am seeing more and more male nurses in the hospitals (have 3 boys so I am there a lot). As far as extra classes I would check with the program you are applying to before taking anything. If they give you extra points for certain classes it will be outlined. If its not they probably won't even look at it and you wasted your time and money. So check out their website or give them a call.
