So I'm taking a harder math class than I have to for nursing (long story), and I'm having the worst time on the exams. I do well on the homeworks and quizzes but do so poorly on the exams. Is anyone else having or had this problem? Any tips?

This may help. It's an IPhone app designed by nurses. It steps through over 70 questions and all the typical nursing math.

Yep. I've been there, done that, and have the emotional battle scars attained through years of developmental (a.k.a. remedial) math hell to mark my mileage.

Anyhow, the website below seems helpful. Click on the link below. Good luck to you!

So...what math class are you taking? Calculus? Stats?

I did 3 semesters of math. 2 remedial, 1 semester of college algebra. I was just glad to make it out of that class alive with my sanity.

I'm taking statistics but that's not too bad. I'm taking intermediate college algebra and I failed it twice so far, this is my third time taking it :(

Oh, stats! Yeah it's not too bad I agree. I liked it too to some extent. I think drawing pictures especially the graph picture of the word problem and shading in specific areas will help a lot from middle towards the end of the course.

Oh no! Mm college algebra .. keep practicing many different problems. that's a good way to get comfortable with the step by step techniques and become fast at it too. repetition is sometimes boring but it must be done for math.

https://www.khanacademy.org/ was my savior when I had to take algebra after being out of school for so long! I also did general searches on youtube for specific areas I struggled in and it helped a lot. I also ended up taking more math classes/harder than needed as well (also a long story LOL).

You say you are doing well on homework/quizzes, but not the tests. Maybe you could try comparing the homework side by side to one of your tests and try to find out what is different about it that is making it harder? I know my math professor made us use MyMathLab online to do all of our homework/quizzes, but he made up his own tests using his own terminology and sometimes it could be a bit tricky and misleading. If that happens to be the case, don't hesitate to ask your instructor for help! No one knows the tests as well as he/she does!

Good luck, you can do it!!!

I hired a tutor to get me through algebra. I did a 7 unit intro/intermediate algebra class (I started in pre-algebra prior). It was intense, nearly 8 hours a week. I ended up with an A, and I do not consider myself a math person. I just knew I couldn't do it without a tutor, so I hired someone to work with me 1 to 2 x's per week, and I am certain that is how I made it through and did so well. It was an expense that I was willing to incur, because I knew I needed the extra attention. Find someone awesome with math that can stick it out with you for a semester. Tell them you need their help to get through the course and faithfully meet with them.

I also used khanacademy to fill in the gaps of my tutoring and in class learning. I personally would not have made it with our math lab tutors, or even my amazing professor. I needed focused one on one attention. After that course, I went on to complete stats, and loved the class. I didn't need as much focused attention there, however we had a tutor devoted to our class and I would work with them every once in a while.

You can do it! Figure out what you need to do to get through this course so that you can keep on pushing towards your dream. Good luck!
