Los Angeles Harbor College LAHC Fall 2014

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello everyone!

i just received an email from LAHC that I have been chosen as an alternate to their nursing program for fall 2014. I'm confused because the letter says as an alternate that I must attend a mandatory orientation to take place in June and at that time I will be ordering my uniform. Why order uniforms if I'm an alternate with no confirmation that I'm actually in?

Has anyone else been an alternate for LAHC and are you familiar with the procedure?

Thanks!

Hi staceycsu. I am not 100% sure how Harbor utilizes their alternate list. But I think it is definitely worth giving them a call to find out.

On the acceptance email, those who accept the invitation to the program must reply by the 19th of May. Anyone who doesn't respond will be assumed to have declined the acceptance. My guess is that you may be able to get a more definitive answer on whether or not you have a real shot of getting in if you call again after that date. Since the orientation isn't until the 13th of June, there is still plenty of time to figure out where you stand.

Did they give you a number for where you stand on the alternate list? There are plenty of students who apply and get accepted to more than one school, leaving a vacant spot for an alternate to fill. Good luck! I'm crossing my fingers for you! :)

Hi stacey, I received an email yesterday that I was accepted into the Fall 2014 term. My only guess is that an alternate may mean student on standby, if at any case they do not receive a certain amount of acceptances into the program or if the acceptencee's do not pass a certain test (Background check/Drug Test). I agree with rabella though, just kindly respond to the email or even call and ask what that means. Good luck!

I was selected as a candidate for Fall 2014 but I am not 100% sure that I will be accepting this spot. Does anyone know which hospitals LAHC is affiliated with?

Hi Kynzoesmommy! Congrats on your acceptance. From what I know, Kaiser in San Pedro. Not sure about the other hospital.

I was also selected for fall 2014. :)

I checked out the harbor website and found a list of the clinical sites. I'm not sure if this is an updated list.

They are Del Amo Hospital, Harbor UCLA, Kaiser in Downey, Kaiser in the South Bay (I'm assuming this is the San Pedro location), Little Sisters of the Poor, Long Beach Memorial, Little Company of Mary San Pedro, Little Company of Mary Torrance, St. Mary's Hospital (Long Beach), Cantebury Medical Center, and Torrance Memorial.

I hope that helps! :)

Thanks!!! Have u already done your background check?

Yes. I just got my completed background check results back yesterday. I'm not 100% sure how to read it, but I think I should be okay since I have no criminal background or fraud history. I'm very excited!

By the way, my name is Rachele. If you choose Harbor, it would be nice to go in knowing a few people since we will all be on this journey together for the next two years. :)

That is definitely true! I'm jay by the way! I'm surprised this board isn't more active!! Do u live close? I'm sooooo far away nearly 40 miles so that concerns me... As well as the whole child care situation. I wouldn't know how to make things work if my husband has to travel and we have to be at clinicals at 630... How long did it take the background check to go through?

I'm lucky enough to only live about five-ten minutes from the campus in the city of Carson. But I share your concern when it comes to child care. I have three little ones of my own and I'm scrambling my mind trying to figure out a way to make it work. But we all need to figure out our challenges to take advantage if this great opportunity. Getting into a nursing program is so competitive, so I don't want to give up my spot just because it will be tremendously inconvenient. I'm sure many of our fellow students can relate. It will be a challenge worth overcoming, because the payoff in the end will be worth all the effort. :)

As for the background check, I got my results back in about a week. It probably would have came sooner if I didn't place my order mid-week. I think the weekend wait made it take longer. Now the only thing left to complete is the physical, but I think we'll get more information on that at the orientation.

By the way, do you have any idea how much the uniforms will cost? The email said we will be ordering our uniforms at orientation, but did not specify how much we should expect to spend.

hey guys I'm a little late but I received a phone call on May 19 from a lady saying saying I've been accepted to the program and that the deadline was at 4pm n I of course said yes but I never received any email from them so I told her is something wrong with my email and she said their shouldn't be a problem she then said she would email orientation information which I haven't received so guys I know it's June 13 but can u guys tell me the time and maybe any other info I need I'm really anxious that I'm not receiving anything

yay congrats on your acceptance into the Fall program. Orientation will be held next friday, June 13th from 9am-4:30pm in the Nursing Building, RM 133. We were told to bring in our results from our background check. Also, don't forget to bring a check or ccard because we will be ordering our uniforms that same day. If i were you I would reply back to that email and ask for further information regarding the orientation so that way they can give you more information on the background check if you hadn't done that already, which takes time to get.
