Mom & Nursing Student
Thank you for posting this. I will be starting my first semester of an ADN program this Fall with three little ones ( 8, 6, & 4 years old). I'm very worried about how I'm going to get through nursing school. I'm glad I found this thread. Thank you to all the moms who have shared their tips and experiences. It's very reassuring to know that it has been done and it is not impossible. :)

Los Angeles Harbor College LAHC Fall 2014
I'm lucky enough to only live about five-ten minutes from the campus in the city of Carson. But I share your concern when it comes to child care. I have three little ones of my own and I'm scrambling my mind trying to figure out a way to make it work. But we all need to figure out our challenges to take advantage if this great opportunity. Getting into a nursing program is so competitive, so I don't want to give up my spot just because it will be tremendously inconvenient. I'm sure many of our fellow students can relate. It will be a challenge worth overcoming, because the payoff in the end will be worth all the effort. :) As for the background check, I got my results back in about a week. It probably would have came sooner if I didn't place my order mid-week. I think the weekend wait made it take longer. Now the only thing left to complete is the physical, but I think we'll get more information on that at the orientation. By the way, do you have any idea how much the uniforms will cost? The email said we will be ordering our uniforms at orientation, but did not specify how much we should expect to spend.

Los Angeles Harbor College LAHC Fall 2014
Yes. I just got my completed background check results back yesterday. I'm not 100% sure how to read it, but I think I should be okay since I have no criminal background or fraud history. I'm very excited! By the way, my name is Rachele. If you choose Harbor, it would be nice to go in knowing a few people since we will all be on this journey together for the next two years. :)

Los Angeles Harbor College LAHC Fall 2014
I was also selected for fall 2014. :) I checked out the harbor website and found a list of the clinical sites. I'm not sure if this is an updated list. They are Del Amo Hospital, Harbor UCLA, Kaiser in Downey, Kaiser in the South Bay (I'm assuming this is the San Pedro location), Little Sisters of the Poor, Long Beach Memorial, Little Company of Mary San Pedro, Little Company of Mary Torrance, St. Mary's Hospital (Long Beach), Cantebury Medical Center, and Torrance Memorial. I hope that helps! :) http://www.lahc.edu/classes/nursing/clinicinformation.html

Los Angeles Harbor College LAHC Fall 2014
Hi staceycsu. I am not 100% sure how Harbor utilizes their alternate list. But I think it is definitely worth giving them a call to find out. On the acceptance email, those who accept the invitation to the program must reply by the 19th of May. Anyone who doesn't respond will be assumed to have declined the acceptance. My guess is that you may be able to get a more definitive answer on whether or not you have a real shot of getting in if you call again after that date. Since the orientation isn't until the 13th of June, there is still plenty of time to figure out where you stand. Did they give you a number for where you stand on the alternate list? There are plenty of students who apply and get accepted to more than one school, leaving a vacant spot for an alternate to fill. Good luck! I'm crossing my fingers for you! :)

Los Angeles City College-Fall 2014 Applicants
I vaguely remember them saying at an information session that harbor accepts about 40 students also. I don't know anything about the alternates. I wonder how many were invited to take or submit their teas scores? It's killing me to not know what our odds of getting accepted are. I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping that we will be one of the lucky ones chosen! The anticipation is brutal.

I applied to LAHC. The wait is killing me. They said they will notify us in May and not to call. I have been obsessively checking my emails since I turned in my application. ?

Anyone have any experiences with Downey Adult School in OC ?
Hi everyone, I just found out about Downey Adult School and its LVN program seems really promising. I'm very interested in trying to get into the program, but the acceptance process seems kind of lengthy. How long after you take the entrance exam do they inform you of whether you've been accepted into the pre-vn course? And after that, how long after the pre-vn course do they tell you whether you've gotten into the program? I also go to community college (trying to get my pre-req's out of the way for RN), and I'd hate to waste a semester waiting around for an answer. I'm really excited about this program and I'm hoping I can get in. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance everyone! :) Rachele

Southern California nursing programs?? (ADN)
Thanks Gizelle22. Cypress wasn't even on my list of potential schools, but it's nearing the top now. Thanks for the pointers. :)

Southern California nursing programs?? (ADN)
Thanks rocketberger! That was extremely helpful! Thank you for taking your time out and providing a link! Cypress seems to have the fairest system for admission that I've seen so far. Admission is still competitive, but everyone still has a guarantee of admission eventually. I never really looked into Cypress College until now, and it's a real contender. Thanks! :)

Southern California nursing programs?? (ADN)
Hello everyone, I'm a pre-nursing student, still working on my pre-req's at Los Angeles Harbor College. I was hoping to get into the nursing program at my current school, but I'm a little discouraged by the lottery system used to determine which applicants will be accepted into the program. I'd like to look into nursing programs at other schools, but I don't know where to start. I checked out a few community college websites but I find a lot of the same thing, and the information I'm looking for isn't anywhere to be found. If anyone has any info on the nursing programs at Los Angeles Harbor College, El Camino College, Long Beach City College, Cypress College, Cerritos College, or any other community college nursing program, could you please share your experiences? For example, is it a lottery based system or is there a waiting list? How competitive is admission? What are the REAL admission criterion? They always say 3.0 or so, but what are they really looking for? I want to be really prepared for the road ahead and I'd like to know what my options are. I'm sure I'm not alone in my curiousity and wish I could just find this type of information all in one place. I'm hoping my fellow students & alum could offer some insight & help us all out. Thanks a bunch!
