I want to be a CRNA so what!!!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I get so tired of people talking down to others for wanting to be a certified registered nurse anesthetist. I want to be one and I don't care who have a problem with it. Yes the money will be good, but it's also a dream of mines. There it is I said it. I do very well in school and I have the grades (well so far) to get into anesthesia school and I plan on doing it. Instead of discouraging me cheer for me please and I will do the same for you.

I have never seen people talk down to others for wanting to be a nurse anesthetist but it does seem like everyone wants to be one. The first day of class when the teachers asked what your goals are, etc. Between 50% to 75% of our class said they wanted to be a CRNA. A few of those people failed out that first trimester. In fact the only people that did fail were students that had said they wanted to become a CRNA. They were very unrealistic students

I just think that a lot of people are only looking at the money and unlike you they do not have the drive and determination to actually follow through.

I was not part of that 75% by the way. I said I want to work in a medi spa and half the class had no idea what I was talking about.

I don't understand why people shun those who want to become a CRNA. If it is your dream to do it, then do it! Don't let anyone's negativity hold you back! :redbeathe

Maybe instead of taking such a hostile tone from the outset, you'd have support and encouragement.

ITA. I think people think CRNA is the way to riches and glory. OP, that is not intended for you. But I've talked to nurses who note that you never really know until you actually become a nurse. And when you go on job interviews for a ICU position, don't tell them that you're trying to do CRNA. Because it looks like you're using them.

I think I want to do ICU but I've grown attracted to med-surg(i just got a job as a pct on a med-surg floor). And I heard most nurses hate med-surg. I noticed that most nursing students only want peds, mother/baby, and ICU. Hmmm, I wonder what kind of competition that creates.

Things do change though while you are in nursing school. If you polled our class now I bet it would be about 15% that would say that want to be a CRNA. A lot of people changed their goals while in school. We even have a few that have applied for med school and that was certainly not at all on their mind when they started their aBSN.

I wonder what the least desirable departments are? I am applying for internships and they are so competitive and I want to pick the least desirable departments for less competition.

I would say the least desirable from my observation is LTC. Many nurses(and CNA's like me) hate LTC. But it depends on the facility you go to I suppose. Also, I think people are turned off by med-surg because of the amount of patients you have and they say it gets boring. I think I would disagree with that, though. There is also burn nursing, which is hard for anyone to do.

But that's interesting that some of your classmates have decided to go to med school now. I wonder what kind of surprises I will see with my class when I start this fall.

Yeah one of the students that decided on med school ended up in nursing haphazardly. Her partner was transfered to the island for two years. She was looking into how she could fill her time while he worked and she had just finished her BA. Our university does not have pre-reqs. The science classes are integrated. So she decided to go to nursing school. But before moving here she had no intentions of going into health and medicine. I think her BA was in urban studies.

The departments mentioned are not usually choices for any of the internships except med-surg.

Oh I understand. Well, I hope you find the internship you're looking for. Can't wait to be in your shoes 2 years from now!

I am really hoping for the Mayo Clinic and I highly suggest it but it is super duper competitive. I have a 3.89 and I am not sure if it is good enough. We should find out this week.

If you haven't started to volunteer I suggest doing that as soon as possible. I volunteer at the VA 4 hours a week and I learn massive amounts of information just from that. And as a nursing student here in Puerto Rico the nurses (and the nurse managers) allow the volunteers to do a lot of stuff. I don't want to get anyone in trouble so I'll leave it at that.

Anyway you will learn a lot but also the better internships look for volunteer work.
