Feeling discouraged

I could use a pep talk lol. So I went to meet with my academic advisor today in regards to taking the necessary steps to get myself ready to apply to nursing school. She informed me that I, pretty much, need to be pulling straight A's in all of my pre-reqs to even have a chance to get in. While I know the nursing program is competitive, this is a little discouraging. I haven't taken a college course since I was 19 which was almost 7 years ago. I've taken medical terminology, speech, english comp and biology w/ lab. My GPA at my last college was 3.69 which is great but not perfect like my advisor is telling me it needs to be. I did have a B or two. Since its been awhile, I'm not exactly confident in my book smarts, especially when it comes to math as I struggled with it in high school. Any word of advice? I'm still going to put my best foot forward but I'm a little nervous of being told that all of my hard work isn't good enough.

It depends on what program you want to apply to and at which schools. For example if you choose to get your ADN first and then bridge to your BSN, there are plenty of schools here in Cali that are lottery based in order to get a seat in their program. So lets say you apply with your 3.69 and someone applies with the mininum of a 2.5 then you and that person have the same chance of getting in. And then there are schools who want that 4.0 so it all depends on the program and school.

Don't be discouraged you have a great GPA and continue to do your best and if you can pull off straight A's even better because you will have more options as to where you apply. If you get a B do not get discouraged you can still get in as long as you don't fail or get too many C's so yea be happy you got an awsome GPA and the sky is the limit. Counselors say that so you do your best they don't want to leave room for you to think you can slack off and get away with it. Forget those comments and keep your head up high and do your best and you will definetly get in somewhere. Also when you apply, apply to more than one place and do well on your TEAS these things will all make you more competative. Good luck! You can do this!

Getting accepted to any nursing school can be a very tough and emotional process. Yes, it is very competitive and at times you will feel that you may not have a chance to get in. What I did was I applied at schools that were further away from me. Since I lived in the cities, I applied to a nursing program that was about 3.5 hours away from me. Because it's so far and less competitive, I got in. You have to do what ever it takes for you to reach your goal. No, I didn't have straight A's and my GPA is about 3.4. I've also recently quitted my job to put more effort into school. You got this. You can do it. And what ever you do, just don't give up.

See, I don't really understand why advisers say this stuff. My adviser told me the same thing. But when I visited advisers at the schools I am looking into going to (and have now applied to), they ALL told me that my GPA (at 3.79, not including the 5 courses I am currently in and the three courses I will be taking this summer) was very good. Every one of them acted impressed... which shocked me because I was so scared my GPA would not get me in at all based off what MY adviser had said about needing a 4.0.

That being said, I am still applying at schools. The first schools I will hear from wont contact me for another week or so. So... I could be doomed still, lol. But based off the meetings I have had with the other schools, the 4.0 thing is not necessary at all.

Also, they really pay the most attention to certain classes.
