Can I get into nursing school with a so-so GPA?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hello, I am new to this forum and I have TONS of questions about nursing school and what it takes to get in.

I am 21 and I just recently earned my Associate in Science degree from a community college with a GPA of 3.34. I scored a 86.3 on my HESI with a 840 on critical thinking.

I know this isnt horrible but I have been rejected from a nursing school about a year ago because of my low GPA.

Can anyone tell me what to focus on to better my chances? Should I volunteer more? Idk! I really want this!

Yes, volunteering more will be helpful. Are there any classes you can retake to bring your GPA up some?

It varies between schools and programs. In my area, associate degree nursing programs would accept your GPA, especially with volunteer hours under your belt, but at my current school, the B.S. nursing program says my 3.8 is not competitive enough and they aren't interested in my hundreds of volunteer hours. Which type of program are you interested in? Some schools that use a points system for acceptance also give additional points on your application if you already hold some type of degree.

I could retake microbiology. But I am avoiding that unless I don't get in this semester. I am going to try to volunteer at the local hospital to get more volunteer hours.

And I am unsure of how TAMU-CC accepts applicants. I've heard of the point system but I don't know for sure if that is what they do. But I am applying for the BSN program. I am just going to hope for the best this time and if I don't get in this semester I will retake micro and get more volunteer hours.

Depends on where you are! I have a 3.3 gpa overall, but higher in my pre req sciences. I got into our Bsn program with 3.8 in the classes they count! Plus, they interviewed so that helped. Find a school that has a more well rounded application process with room to shine in other areas besides just gpa. Good luck!

Try private schools if that is an option. It might be a little pricey but they often give out grants. Sometimes hospitals have agreements with the schools to pay for your education. Depends on your school and local hospital.

I would say look at a private school or schools that only go by your pre-req gpa and testing score (usually TEAS). I wouldn't re-take any pre-req classes unless the school you're applying to doesn't mark you down for it. On schools I've applied to, you get marked down if you re-took it more than once within the past 5 years.

And competition is brutal out there for bsn programs... You need to pick a school that has less competition, and one that doesn't grade you based on overall gpa. If you're going for a state uni or something, I think it will be difficult with 3.34. But if you're going for an associate's in nursing, your gpa is okay. It just depends on your competition at the time of your application.
