Alternative majors?! Out of motivation.

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Lately, I've been feeling extremely discouraged when it comes to nursing. I don't feel like my grades or anything is good enough to get in to any programs. Everybody that I've talked to that got in had straight A's and over 87% on their teas. If I don't get in on my first round of applications, I decided to try to major in something else. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE nursing. The thought of doing that for the rest of my life makes me really happy but, I honestly don't think I will get into an BSN programs. A lot of people tell me "if that's what you really love, then keep trying". But I really cant afford to keep trying. I don't have that kind of time and especially money. Are there any other fields worth exploring? I am only interested in science/health related fields. Thank you!

I know at the hospital where I'm precepting, ADN- and BSN-prepared nurses make the same salary, no boost for having a BSN. I haven't heard of a differential being more than $2/hr for that, and it's usually less. An ADN program is likely your best bet.

I will consider it! Thanks for your info!

I'm an ADN new grad and I make the same as some of the other nurses that have actual experience and BSNs. Sky is the limit girl!

You're lucky that your parents are helping you with college :) but if it takes longer than 4 years isn't it possible for you to pay by taking out loans etc. I mean if this is your dream job I think it'll be worth the time and money in the long run.

Yeah thats true! It's just that I know my family would be really disappointed in me if I went to a community college. Most of my family has never been to college and know nothing about it so when they hear city college they automatically assume failure :/

That's amazing! I will definetely take an ADN into consideration. Did you go to a private college or community college to obtain your ADN, if you dont mind me asking.

Lol, I know how that is. I'm asian too  My parents have no idea how school works or how much it costs. They have even told me that I should just quit school and work because they think I am "wasting" my money. BUT I know that they'll be there when I graduate and will be proud of me even though they won't show it. I think you should do what you want to do. I know money is an issue but it's an issue for every college student. lol I am in major debt but I want to be a nurse and I can't imagine doing anything else.

Okay thank you for the info! I will definitely be applying for many ADN programs.
