accelerated bsn or entry level msn

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello,

I'm new to this I have a couple of questions. okay so I'm currently getting my B.A. in dance and I went this path because I've always have a love for dance and wanted to get a degree on it, its more of a self achievement rather than making a career out of it, BUT I wanted nursing to be my career. My main goal is to be a Pediatric NP.

So I have two plans..

one is..

After I graduate I'm planning to go to Concordia University in Irvine for their 1 year Acc-BSN program..is there anyone who goes there and any tips.. how it works, how much it cost and stuff like that?

and after that, I want to get my Pediatric NP certificate at CSULB and if so how long will that take?

second is..

should I just enter CSULB MEPN program concentrating on Pediatric NP? if so how long will that take? and if so..any one doing this program? any tips or advise on how to get in..and stuff like that

I'm just trying to see how long it will take me to be an Pediatric NP..and if so which route will be faster?

Thanks in advance.

hello, I was looking at that do you think I can enter the ELMN and I believe the first 18 months was the bsn..and stop there? or do I have to keep going with the program? why would it take long for you to become a nurse? are you planning on going the same route?

I'm pretty sure I got the pre-reqs right, chem, physiology & anatomy, micro, patho, pharmacology, sociology or anthropology and I think a couple more.. all these classes are in progress ...as far as psychology & child dev. I finished it already.. my gpa its around 3.8. For different languages.. I'm a fluent writer & speaker when it comes to tagalog(philippines), I can understand spanish but can't talk spanish :/ . Once I get my BSN or MSN I wanted to work for a couple of years to gain the experience and then do the CRNA program, by the way i'm also working on my CNA license this summer so I can start gaining the experience. :)

congratulations on your accomplishments!. I recommend you talk to a guidance counselor. ask them what your best option would be since you'd have your bachelor's in Dancing. do NOT let them talk you into an ADN/ASN (associates in nursing . they offer these in community colleges and even in some universities) . you must go for the MSN (masters) or BSN ( bachelors) because crna (nurse anesthetist) only takes those with a bachelor's. do NOT waste your time on an associates degree. I'm not completely sure if the entry level masters in nursing lets you stop once you pass 18 months. I was wondering this myself. and I was also planning on getting an undergrad in a science because I want to apply to dental and pharmacy school (if I can even stand science--we'll have to see once I get my algebra done :lol2: ) or also in Philosophy hehe

either way, Prince 27, you will not go wrong even getting your bachelors degree. I'm not completely sure but I imagine those master level nursing are more expensive anyhow.

here's a list of accredited RN programs in California. scroll to the bottom where it says EL-MN. check their websites for information and fees)

when did you finish the prerequisites? there is a 5 year limit on those courses

yeah..I guess I'll have to ask a counselor, that's the best way to go about it. ahh..I don't hate science.. I don't love it either but for some reason it just comes easy for me..its weird! lol. Oh but I do NOT like Chemistry hahaa..and as far as philosophy I love ethics not so much of critical thinking..haha!!! anyways good luck on dental or pharmacy school :) I'm doing my pre-reqs right now at a cc while finishing up my dance. Thank you for all the help :) !!! its greatly appreciated !

Specializes in allergy and asthma, urgent care.

Prince27,

If you're really sure about being a CRNA, then go for the accelerated BSN. There's no point getting a direct entry MSN when you'll just have to go for another Master's degree to be a CRNA. Get your BSN, then work in critical care for a couple of years to get the experience you need.

yes, like I said, even if it's not accelerated go for the bachelors cause I'm sure the masters is super expensive compared to the bachelor. .

also, this is just my suggestion but , why don't you do dancing AFTER becoming a nurse. that way you don't put those prerequisites to waste while getting the dance degree since they have an expiration date. some RN programs have it for 3 years, I think. I would like to start the program as soon as possible if i knew that nursing is what I want to do. you're still in community college so you still have the chance to change major :clown:

thank you for the advice :) I have another question..now does anyone else know any accelerated bsn program here in so-cal, preferably a 1 yr. program. I'm looking around and all I know of is concordia(expensive), csu northridge & mount st. mary's college(expensive)..I want a program that's not too expensive =/.

cost

a 15-month is for the northridge

http://www.csun.edu/~nursing/documents/absn201011.pdf

they say the cost is app. 15,000 and it keeps going up.

aww ok... thank you. ! yeah csusm..it used to be 12 month but they changed it to 24 months :( !

I'm probably gonna apply at csun, msmc & concordia.. hopefully another one will open up in the next few years.

Hi Prince27,

Theres a ABSN program at National University in their SoCal locations in Los Angeles and San Diego.

I dont know all the details of your situation but for the most part you generally do 4 years for BSN and another 2 -3 years depending on your specialty for your Masters degree(which would be your NP)Different programs have specs for what is required as far as having a bachelors in a non nursing degree. Your best bet is to call schools you want to attend and check personally what they offer as far as nursing programs

Or you go to an accelerated BSN program like the OP is thinking about and spent a year to 18 months getting your BSN.
