A hello and a question!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hi everyone! My name is Kim and I am starting my prereqs this fall at a local cc. I took the entrance exam and did ok considering I haven't been in school in about 20 years. LOL. My school only takes np apps up until Feb for a Fall start. I need to take a chem class before then in order to qualify to apply for the program. I studied my butt off for the math portion and scored high enough to take prob solving math and chem. This was my goal and so I was very excited. However, I rushed my essay a little because I had to get to work (duh) and so I scored an 8 out of a possible 12 points. This puts me in Eng comp 1.

Now my question. I took eng comp 1 in the one semester of college I took 18 years ago. The school said it MAY transfer. I didn't even try. In your opinions, should I try to get the credit and move on to 2 if I can ( a np requirement), retake the essay and try for another 2 points, OR just retake comp 1 and use it as a review. (which I could probably use by the way!)

I'm afraid I wont do well in 2 without taking one again.

Any opinions?

Thanks in advance!

Kim

Hello- I transfered credits from when I started college back in '89. I would be ticked off if a college didn't take my gen ed classes. They don't expire, although many programs will not take math or science classes over 5 years old. I got lucky in that the college I plan to attend took every one of my classes- even the sciences and math.

I don't think you will have any problem doing Engl comp 2. Your post was well written. Don't waste the money taking the class again!

Thank you for your reply!

I also just realized that I took Psych also. I think I did pretty well in it too.

Stupid question..but if I did..just ok back then will those grades effect my current performance standings?

If so I would rather just redo comp 1 and psych. (although I think I aced the psych final and wound up doing pretty well.)

Thanks again!

It would depend on what the program you are trying to get into bases there entrance on. The school I am trying to get into uses Pysch 1, English 1, A&P 1, and Chemistry to decide who gets in. In other words you had better have an A in those courses if you want into this school. As far as your GPA is concerned they don't look at anything except to make sure it's over 2.5, and then those 4 courses.

So checks your program and see what their requirements are. If its something they really look at then retake it, but if your GPA is good enough and they don't really look at that class individually then I wouldn't waste my time. I hope that makes sense lol.

Admissions is on a point system. It is:

a. Overall grade point average (GPA)

4.0-3.7 = 10 points 3.6-3.3 = 7 points

3.2-2.9 = 4 points 2.8-2.5 = 1 point

b. Prior degree: master’s = 3 points; bachelor’s = 2 points;

associate’s = 1 point.

c. 100% of course work taken at JCC = 2 points.

d. Prior to the semester that the application is being received, completion

of each required non-nursing course with a C or above = 1 point per

So I guess I would get an extra 2 points if I just retook the classes and had all of my course work taken here. i am really unsure how long of a waitlist there is/if any. The 2 points may not make a difference at all. I will speak to an advisor about it next week and see what they think.

Thank you so much for your replies!

I wouldn't even think about this! Get all your old transcripts sent to the school and evaluated for transfer credit! How did you get into this school without having to do that? Retake the English essay part of the entrance exam if you can do that without disturbing your math grade on it. Then, if your previous English Comp I class transfers, it's a moot point. You sign up for English Comp II. In most schools there are different things that are done in these 2 classes so taking the first isn't necessarily going to guarantee that you are going to do any better in the second class.

I don't know..I told a few people that I went to a cc many moons ago and nobody said I HAD to transfer them..just that I could possibly.

I will call them first thing in the morning and get the transcripts sent over. How nice it would be to not have to do psych or eng comp again. With the transfer credit I wouldn't even have to redo the essay. I guess I was just afraid that if my scores then weren't that great..it wouldn't look good for me now.

I wouldn't want mistakes I made 18 years ago to hold me back today.

Thank you for your input!

Well it seems as if I was supposed to send any and all transcripts in. I called the school today and this woman was a little pissy but said I claimed I was a new student and not a "transfer" student on my app. I explained that I may have misunderstood that portion of the app and being that my credits were so old I was unsure if it even counted.

So..my transcripts will need to be turned in. (I also told her that I asked a few different people at the school when I called if I should transfer the classes and they ALL said it was up to me..so I was also given false info.)

Now here's hoping I can get credit for them.
