A&P I Spring 2013

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I did not see another thread, so I thought I would start one for fellow students to chat and get support. Anyone else taking A&P I this spring?

Meep are u referring to the question about Lipids? OMG I was shocked too. She gave everyone credit but I initially got it right and wondered how anyone could get that wrong lol

I believe it was a question about insulin, but it was so easy!! I was amazed that was the one she threw out, I thought there were others that were much less clear. Oh my gosh, I am so freaking out about the practical!!!

Monica - check out bullharrier on YouTube. Also, Marian Diamond from UC Berkeley is wonderful. All of her lectures are on YouTube as well. Is there a particular topic you're struggling with? My professor gave us a huge list of web links and some of those have been great. I'm happy to pass some along!

I'm taking anatomy this semester and my professor is horrible. and she's pregnant and simply sits at her desk the entire time and doesn't even give us objectives or study guides

Thanks for the suggestions, meeep! I'll definitely look into those. No, there's really not one topic I'm having a hard time with. Sometimes it just helps to have things explained another way or simplified. Although I am terrified of the skeletal system. I know it's just straight memorization and that's intimidating. And on top of that my instructor says we're basically on our own for that chapter. :/ I know lab is supposed to supplement the lecture section but we're 2 chapters behind in lab.

MeekaNichole- Not to trivialize your plight, as I'm sure it's frustrating having a lackluster professor but hopefully this will give you a chance to grow in your learning.

My A&P professor, though he is the #1 bio professor at my college, is also the most difficult. He said the first day of class, there will be no study guides, no power points, no objectives and no hints for what will be on the test. The only thing that we needed to know is that if he says it, we need to know it. Not the detail in the book, not the power points, not some study guide etc. He said the benefit of doing it this way is that you are forced to figure out how to take notes on lectures and what to study based on that lecture, which will certainly help you later on when professors in nursing school/med school aren't holding your hand.. By figuring it out yourself you're learning at a true college level instead of learning to take a test.

I'd suggest speaking with you professor and inquire what part of the lecture is the most important. Don't be afraid to tell her that you're not used to having a class without a study guide, tell her and ask her how she wants you to study! By being the student that asks questions to ensure your success she will hopefully guide you!

Good luck, and remember, RATEMYPROFESSOR!

We get all kinds of study material at my school. I honestly think they tell us what we definitely need to know (which is practically 97% of it) because they bunch a bunch of chapers in one single test. Our next test is gonna be on like 6 chapters. It's a lot to take in. Even though we are told this, there are still students who average 60-70 in the class. It's not a matter of if you're being babied or not, it's if you're studying the material. Anyway our professor doesn't let us record her lectures so that's another reason why she gives us power points to write down (which is just touching base on a particular topic.) It's really up to you to use your study time wisely. ;)

I don't think I would equate being provided with power points as being babied. We pay a lot of money for tuition, we should be provided with as many tools to learn the material as possible! :)

That's my p.o.v.

Every professor has their own teaching style. Just because a professor chooses to provide a chapter review, doesn't mean they're holding your hand, that just means they are doing their job if that's how they choose to perform it. A&P is a tough class no matter who you have as a professor.

Okay, whoa. I just had my first A&P test and I don't want to jump the gun, but I think I'm safe to say, I DID AWESOME. It was a 75 question exams, 3pts extra credit. I think I skipped 2 questions to come back to and wasn't 100% on about 5-8 more questions... If I really only got 7-10 wrong, I'll just die of excitement. STUDYING PAYS OFF! I was even the first one done after going back and checking all my answers!

I gave myself leeway to get a C on the first test. I think first tests should always be treated as a guide for how the specific professor tests. But I'm pretty confident I got a b or better!

I am - just got my first lecture class test back. I made a "B" and mine was the class high score. Average score for this test was a 72. I made an 85. Not sure this is good or bad. I have a perfect "A" in lab though.

youtube has some really good videos... i watched a lot of them on the solute pumps, cell division, etc... very good and they really helped!

Wow, 75 questions! That's awesome Chelsea, congrats! You may surprise yourself btw! I thought I may have missed 6-7 questions, and I ended up only getting 1 wrong total. I bet you did better than you think, especially since our study methods seem to be pretty similar.

Is anyone else overwhelmed by lab yet? We are way ahead in lab from where we are in lecture, and learning all the bones of the skull is giving me major anxiety!
