79K for a BSN???

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

So either I wait 3 years to get into nursing school or I sign up now for 79K BSN program  Isn't that extremely expensive??? Has anyone else paid that much?? I am thinking of just taking pre-reqs until I can transfer in as many as possible. I am just discouraged by the timeline :uhoh3: I am already 28 years old and not happy in corporate america. So over rated. This has always been a passion of mine but I just can't justify that paying that much. Not to mention I can't work full time while attending. I'd have to quit my job....and find part time work. Advice really needed :crying2:

Thanks

Eharper I totally understand how excited you are about college! I am too! I am 48 entering college and yes, looking at a mountain of debt(loans if I can't get grants) to do it but you know, we're worth it! Nursing is worth it!

I am going to take pre-nursing courses (starting January 2011) at my local community college and am trying to decide to apply for LPN to get my foot in the door and transfer to UAB (Im in Alabama) or just finish the prenursing courses and apply to UABs program. I am relying on grants and aid too. I have been living with my parents helping them for 10 years. Daddy died last year so now its just me and momma. 78k is alot of money but over the past 30 yrs I have probably spent that on my 2 ex husbands..hindsight is 20/20 and not its my turn.

Any of you that would like to friend me please do, I am new at this site..

I think you need to consider your life-time return on investment as well as what you would do if you can't find a job immediately after passing the NCLEX and end up in a situation where you are having to re-pay your student loans without the benefit of a nursing job. Good luck to you!

I did my pre-reqs at the jr. college and have waited so far 1 year to try to get in, with no luck. In my area, the jr. colleges are a lottery, and on average it's taking 3-4 YEARS to get in, due to the amount of people applying.

I was accepted immediately to Samuel Merritt university because they admit based on grades. I was accepted into both their accelerated BSN (cost $60K) and entry level master's program (cost $90K). I thought about it, and I accepted the master's program. I am 40 years old and don't feel like I have time to wait around to *maybe* get my name drawn in the community college lottery (and only finish with a ASN anyway).

The only thing I would caution you is that nursing is so much more than I thought it would be when I quit my corporate job 4 + years ago now to do this. I am NOT saying I regret my decision to do so, I am only saying I wish I had shadowed an RN to get a real taste of what the workload and the wearing of all hats nursing is.

And to answer your intended question, YES that is outrageously expensive. Come to Canada to learn.

I would strongly advise against spending $79K on a BSN, especially at a for-profit school like Chamberlain (NYU is similarly expensive, but at least they're a real school with a good reputation). Look at state and city universities, they will be MUCH less expensive.

Wow! Thank you everyone for all the great feedback. After taking the weekend to think long and hard about it, I have decided to start off slow and take biology while working. I'll see how well I do in that first. In the meantime, I am going to look out for other schools.

Thanks again!
