The application is now open!!! I have not started my application yet since I am awaiting my acceptance to my nursing program. I am applying to three ABSN programs and one generic BSN program. However, I already have my recommendations and paperwork waiting in the wings.

I just started looking into this today and I'm having trouble determining what facilities, if any, in my area qualify. Lots to consider w/ this scholarship program!

Do you choose the facility you would like to work at or are you placed? I have thought about applying to this but I am not able to move away, so I'm not sure this would be good for me.

Yes, you have to find the facility on your own. The facility just has to meet certain requirements. I think there are several in my area that would fulfill the requirements. I just have to make sure.

But the position has to be primary care or mental health related, correct? It isn't necessarily any nursing position in an approved facility?

Go look at the application requirements. There is a certain standard that HRSA has put on medical facilities and there is a point values attached to it. Hospitals have to be located in areas that have a shortage in the primary care and/or mental health field. That does not mean that a nursing student who received the scholarship has to work in those areas. As long as the hospital has the need you can work there in any capacity as a nurse.

Thanks. I tried a few of the lookup tools they link to, but that didn't help much... one shows no facilities in my area and the other shows a ton : (

I've just heard terrible stories from past recipients who struggled to find suitable positions to meet the requirements after graduation.... I know I want to get into OB nursing so I'm hesitant to apply...

I'm also thinking about applying for this, but like you am leaning towards OB nursing and am not sure that I want to do 2 years at a community clinic immediately after graduation. I am afraid I will lose a lot of acute care skills that I may need later on if I decide I do want to do acute care nursing or OB. It's definitely a hard decision, because on the other hand, the help with funding for school would be great!

I am curious where you have heard the stories from past recipients who struggled - are these people you know? Did they have to find their own placement or did HRSA help them? Did they have to move away? I have children and moving to another area is NOT an option since their dad and I are divorced and I can't move them away from him.

I am going to apply and see what happens, but part of me is leaning towards just taking out loans and sucking it up to repay them afterwards, but maintain my freedom in where I want to work. I'm torn!!

I looked over the application last night as well. I agree with the other posters on the search engines for the shortage areas. They were confusing and not very efficient. If you're interested in going into a community clinic, mental health facility, or a health department, then this would be a great scholarship for you. It would fit into your desired career plan. I live in Georgia and I looked up starting salaries for an RN at local health departments... I could make more money waiting tables. They require full time commitments with 36 hours. Health departments are usually banker's hours around here, so doesn't leave much time if you want to pick up shifts elsewhere. While it is definitely not for me, if you are interested in going into community nursing or you live in a state where the critical shortage area is a hospital where you can go into your dream specialty, then you should definitely apply.
