Yale GEPN Applicants 2012

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

There didn't seem to be a main thread for applicants to Yale's GEPN program this year, so I thought I'd get one started. I'm applying for the midwifery specialty and am currently working on my application essays, having done everything else.

Is anyone else really struggling with the main essay? I've finished my apps to two other programs and was happy with how those essays came out, but Yale's essay guidelines as so restrictive that I feel like my essay is turning out all disjointed. The fact that we have to answer every aspect of every question in *exactly the order they list* (this is apparently something that you need to take very seriously) means that I'm having to tie myself in knots. I want it to be not only informative about me as an applicant but also a good piece of writing - and I feel like the essay format is making this kind of difficult.

Anyone else out there applying?

manhattandoula - I would drop the classes! I think they will teach you what you need to know, and if you got in then they think you will be able to learn the material w/o the prereqs. I would just enjoy your time now before you start grad school in the fall!

why is this thread so quiet?? where is everyone? right now I'm obsessing about how I'm going to get to new haven this summer. anyone else relocating from the west coast? pacific northwest? what are you planning to do with your things? sell everything or ship?

also manhattandoula I agree with km446 that you should withdraw and enjoy your time before school starts. you will have the next three years to take classes!

excited to meet everyone!

@manhattandoula--so here's my 2 cents worth. I would only take the courses if I was no longer able to get ANY refund. If you can still get, say, 80% of your tuition refunded they I would take it an enjoy my summer. Otherwise, I would not just forfeit my classes and get a 'W'. 'W's never make you feel good. It's like paying for a gym membership and not using it ;) I dunno....can you just maybe approach the classes a little differently?.....Maybe take the courses for fun?...Don't shoot for an 'A' just have fun with them. Can you take any of them pass/fail? I am not the best person to ask though, I will be auditing cell bio in the summer "for fun". I hear ya...this is a tough call. Best of luck with decision making.

Thank you all so much for your feedback.

Steelypop . . . I won't get any tuition back, but it's community college so it didn't cost very much. I don't care about the money. My main concern is literally having a transcript with 5 W's on it. I'm 38 years old and I don't know if I'll submit my transcripts anywhere ever again, but just in case I do . . . you never know! That being said, I'd love to free up my time.

Does anyone think it would "look bad"?

I don't think it will look that bad - you usually get to explain anything that might stick out on your transcripts if you are applying to another program, and I don't think anyone would hold it against you that you dropped the classes because they weren't required by the school you attended. The most important thing in that case will likely be your transcripts from yale.

@manhattandoula--in total agreement with km446, the most important transcript will be from Yale. If freeing up time is most important, then don't sweat the 'W's. Sounds like you won't need to submit that transcript anywhere anyway right? And even if you do want to go onto a PhD or post-master's cert, then you will NOT need to submit something from Com. Col anyway.....it would be your BA/S and MSN transcript they would be most interested in. You are totally gold manhattandoula, I am just a total stinge-ball and so that kinda colored by previous response. Sounds like you should go fix yourself an iced tea and enjoy the summer! ;)

Hi all! I posted a few times in the beginning, but I'm also back and super excited. I was accepted for the WHNP Track. I'm curious - has anyone else received financial aid information yet (beyond FAFSA, that is)? I know we were told we would get it close to when we heard the answers, but I have yet to receive anything. I certainly hope this does not mean I did not receive any aid!

I havenĀ“t received anything yet either. hopefully some time this week!

Manhattandoula - I cannot express how insane the GEPN year is. If you can bear it, take those pre-reqs - or at least the most helpful ones. Come fall semester, when you don't have to take anatomy/phys, you will be so thankful for the extra time to devote to Med Surg and Pharm - they are beasts. Although, I must say that the cadaver lab is pretty awesome! FYI, if you waive out, you can always enroll in A&P and just go when you feel like it, i.e. cadaver lab! Maybe I'm a little weird, but I found it fascinating - LOL!

I don't think we can opt out of A and P anymore....I remember Linda P mentioning that.

Unfortunately there's no more waiving out of A&P (that's what we were told on interview day).
