Thanks Pam! Very useful! I can envision my next year a little better. Can you tell us on average the # of hours you have to devote to out-of-class study (circa) and also what you need to do for your clinical (like reports, assignments etc.). Thanks!!!!! And can't wait to meet you!

Oh and the extra vacation time gives you the luxury to really sink your teeth into your thesis/praxis/capstone

CBlack37--sorry everyone....I came off rough about Columbia needlessly. I just a) hate to be rushed and b) am totally biased because I am familiar with the work of two Profs at Yale and am in awe of them, to say the least. Columbia is an awesome school and living in NY would be great. But, yeah....go with your gut CBlack37. Your apprehension about the praxis tells me that you are very aware that you need to (as I need to, as MANY of us need to) learn the discipline to be a self motivator. This is a skill you should probably master before finishing grad school and one of the most important you should take away from your education. You will also NOT be alone in doing this....we will be a tight community and will do it together.....I personally will send you emails in to get your butt in gear if you promise to do the same with me Good luck CBlack37.....it's gonna be hard sure, but sometimes "you have to me cruel to be kind" (can I utilize eighties cheezy pop music please?) Am I convincing you that this is your own choice or am I just trying to convince you that YALE IS AWESOME? Probably the latter, but man I totally believe it

Oh, by the way I meant "good luck" not "good look" jyager... you may have had a microsecond of confusion sorry...(your 'look' is probably also very 'good' so my slip was not so bad after all....) @cblack37, I know the praxis sounds intimidating but for me it was actually a selling point..You can get the opportunity to explore outside the traditional nursing education format. Yale doesn't want a load of nurses who can read, memorize, and recite, or in clinicals just mindlessly repeat the same action over and over. They want you to incorporate what you have learned and they want you to THINK. That's my sense anyway.....Yale is not the McDonalds equivalent of nursing. It is also scary and suspicious to me that Columbia's program is so short. But then again I totally carry the banner for Yale, so take what I say with my bias in mind. My impression is that Columbia is more "shake n' bake" nursing. Sorry. Now I am in trouble with some of you, i'm sure.

@manhattandoula--in total agreement with km446, the most important transcript will be from Yale. If freeing up time is most important, then don't sweat the 'W's. Sounds like you won't need to submit that transcript anywhere anyway right? And even if you do want to go onto a PhD or post-master's cert, then you will NOT need to submit something from Com. Col anyway.....it would be your BA/S and MSN transcript they would be most interested in. You are totally gold manhattandoula, I am just a total stinge-ball and so that kinda colored by previous response. Sounds like you should go fix yourself an iced tea and enjoy the summer!

@manhattandoula--so here's my 2 cents worth. I would only take the courses if I was no longer able to get ANY refund. If you can still get, say, 80% of your tuition refunded they I would take it an enjoy my summer. Otherwise, I would not just forfeit my classes and get a 'W'. 'W's never make you feel good. It's like paying for a gym membership and not using it I dunno....can you just maybe approach the classes a little differently?.....Maybe take the courses for fun?...Don't shoot for an 'A' just have fun with them. Can you take any of them pass/fail? I am not the best person to ask though, I will be auditing cell bio in the summer "for fun". I hear ya...this is a tough call. Best of luck with decision making.

I'm WH but much of what sold it for me has to do with that the resources at Yale are just so darn impressive. The human ones as well as matierial . You have access to some prominent profs in not ONLY nursing, but also public health, medicine, anthro, soc.....which I think enriches the nurs. school specific education. We'll have not only great clinical and theoretical NURSING experience but we will get a sense of how this whole nursing business fits into the grand scheme of things, at the cultural, social, technological, and political level (and ten zillion other "levels" I have omitted). You can't get that at places where....well....there aren't as many awesome profs and creative people. This school played a major part in professionalizing nursing.....that's a big selling point for me too! Good luck with your decision making km446.

so weird....I posted ages ago but, along with a load of others, that post seems to have been lost....Oh well, I am glad to be back on and have been kinda surreptitiously monitoring goings on in this forum. But now I feel like I surely MUST, MUST join because I am in, in, in. Feels nice. Big congrats to my brothers and sisters in crime! I would love to get to know the other peeps matriculating into WH specialty.....are you out there? Oh....and I suspect, like last time....these emails are being released in 'lots'. Likely there will be more in in-boxes tomorrow, don't you think? My heart is in my belly for the rest of you who have yet to hear......just sit tight. And put down that cigarette/whiskey/tub of ice-cream would you!!! ......been there.....done that. It only gets you smelly/drunk/fat.
