Nursing Students Post Graduate

Hi still waiting for a reply to UC for spring semester, but thought I would try to start a thread for new and current MSN students of any advance practice program at University of Cincinnati. I hope you all join me.

Hi everyone! I am currently enrolled in the UCit ANP distance learning program. I started in March 2010 and am finishing up my second quarter (finals week this week.. yuck!) Is anyone already in the program that can give me a heads up about Policy and Clinical reasoning? Work load? Group projects etc? I need to mentally prepare! If anyone has any questions about Biostats, physiology, patho or finance I've already got those under my belt (Pretty sure my physiology professor is no longer with the school so I may not be able to help with that one) Good luck new students!

Jfitton,

I start the program on Wednesday. I will take any advice you can give. I am taking physiology and biostatistics. How are the classes?? Do they have tests or do you do a lot of reports. The physiology class pretty overwhelming. Tell me EVERYTHING!!!! HA HA

Thanks for the heads up!

Hello Everyone,

I am curious to know if anyone has received an acceptance letter/email from UC FNP program lately. I submitted my application middle of June 2010.

Thanks,

JKidzMom,

I am in my second quarter at UCit. I took a quarter off to have my second baby. I can tell you this Physiology is a monster. However, the course is manageable with much studying. When I took physiology in Spring 2010, the breakdown of assignments included case studies (group), weekly quizzes, discussion questions (group), individual paper. You follow what are called modules (approx. 2 weeks in each module). I have been out of nursing school for a while and my patient population has been primarily NICU/pediatric, so I had to put quite a bit of time into studying. The funny thing is it is almost impossible to retain all the information required in such a short time. For example, Cardio covered in one week (6 chapters to read). The lectures (some powerpoint and some actual in class lectures) are great (you follow along with PDF handouts you print out). The biggest challenge will probably be time management because there is SOOO much material to focus on.

Biostatistics wasn't that bad. Please don't make the mistake and place so much of your attention on physiology that you forget to focus on biostats too. Reading summary and quizzes (1 of each for each module). Not too bad, just ask questions early on if you don't understand because the material builds on each other.

I hope this helps! Good luck!!!

I sent in my application the end of May/early June for the online CNS/NE track - hoping to get in for Fall term. Didn't get any reply, so I sent an email to the application advisor and was told my application was being considered for the Spring term. I am seriously dying from this long wait!

I appreciate the info from the last poster about the type/amount of work involved - thanks! Does anyone else have any feedback about the online program?

Thanks!

I applied for the WHNP program for this winter. My advisor told me the admissions committee has made decisions. I haven't heard anything yet. Anyone else apply for winter and received a decision?

Finally got my acceptance e-mail! I initially applied for Autumn 2010 start for the CNS/NE program. There must be a lot of demand for this school/program - I don't start until the Spring 2011 term at the end of March. That will mean almost a year of waiting for the program, but I am just happy to finally have an answer!

Congrats!! I just got my acceptance email too. I start in Spring as well

I'm a student, too, psych-NP. I'm going into my 3rd quarter come April. Physiology was the most difficult class so far, although it seemed like health care finance wasn't clicking with me either, for some reason. One tip for the health care finance class: you MUST get the most updated book the professor recommends (the Baker book) because I tried to save and use an older edition and there's chapters that weren't even in there. The other books for finance IMO are worthless, and $$$$!!!, particularly if you follow the online readings that are recommended.

I also don't know why the patho course requires that whole online package mess. the book itself can be found for half the cost of the package, and all I ever did was read the book. IMO the study guide wasn't helpful either. I had better luck using a study guide leftover from physiology.

I'm a book budget person--I hate spending hundreds and hundreds on glossy books I'll likely never use again. BTW, I had the biostats book that was so old it had a floppy disk in the back, but it worked fine.

Don't have any other program advice...I'm in a panicky state of trying to find a clinical placement now. I'm about to the point of offering money or free RN hours on "other days." Aaaiiieee!

Thanks for the info, vampire!

I started reading the physiology text and am amazed at how much I've forgotten since my BSN!!! Still, I am really excited to get started...

*chuckle* Yeah, especially when you get into a specialty, you really forget the old stuff. Especially, for me, the renal and hematology stuff (I think with the SNF I kept up with cardiac, sort of). I'm looking at the pharma book now like it's cauliflower or something.

Good luck and start looking for your practicum EARLY!

Hey, I start the online psychiatric NP program at the university of cincinnati this summer. I was wondering if you would be willing to give me any advice. I plan on still working fulltime and want to know what you think!? Also any advice concerning the different courses would be greatly appreciated! My e-mail is [email protected].
