University of South Alabama NP program

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hi,

I am researching grad schools and became very interested in the University of South Alabama's ENP (dual FNP/ACNP) online program. I am interested in knowing how competitive the program is regarding acceptance. I have a GPA now of 3.3, 2.5 years ER experience in a level one trauma center, 1 year of trauma icu experience, 3 years of management experience, ACLS, PALS, TNCC and will have (hopefully) my CCRN cert when I apply. What are your thoughts considering the above information and your knowledge first or second hand on this university? Thank you for any information you can give.

Hey SopranoKris, Just seeing how the program is going for you, looking to apply soon. Any feed back is appreciated.

I have applied for admission to the Fall 2017 semester. The deadline for application is Feb. 15th, so I'm assuming I won't know a decision until April. Fingers crossed :D

Hello all! I'm applying for the dual NP program for summer of 2018. All the research I've done has all been negative. However, it was from 5 or more years ago. Anyone have any insight on how the program is now?

I am in the Adult Gero Primary Care program there. My friend is in the dual role and she is struggling. Working full time is not an option in my opinion and I will be dropping to part time starting in the spring when I start clinicals.

I would recommend taking the 3 Ps BEFORE you get into the program. If possible, take your writing courses FIRST : 607, 607, 613, and 610 . I really wish that I would have taken pharm BEFORE taking it with the rest of my courses.

Thank you for the response! It is very informative. You get to choose the order in which you can take the courses? I am asking thesequestions since I have left 2 voicemails to the college and no response.

I believe you have to take certain courses in a certain order since some are pre-requisites for others. Their website is put together pretty well, IMO. I'm starting in the Spring 2018 semester in their Post Master's AGPCNP program. You can access the schedules for various programs on their website. Here's a link to their Dual program (schedules are dependent on whether or not you have a BSN): Dual Role (Family NP/Adult-Geron ACNP)

You should get used to not getting responses to emails, phone calls or discussion boards.

I'm in the dual role program. I've finished the masters and working on the DNP. I won't tell anyone not to go to south Alabama but I have had a poor experience. Half way through my degree program they changed my degree plan and added a year with no warning. They informed my class they could do it as many times as they see fit with no warning. To be fair other schools changed their programs but they made the changes apply to students who were starting the program not those already in it. This summer they failed to give me access to the online course on time. I emailed them the day the class opened and was not given access until the day before my initial DNP proposal, several IHI courses, and a discussion board were due. I had emailed earlier in the week to ask for my assignments so I could work on them until the computer issue was resolved and was told no. I requested an extension based on what happened and was told no. The class was pass fail so not turning in those assignments the first week would have been an automatic fail for the class. The issue has extended my time in school another semester. Other issues include two major assignments had to be redone because after the assignments were submitted they changed the criteria for the assignment. Using disease process from the syllabus was not appropriate. No other guidance was given. Essentially, we aren't going to tell you what is appropriate but if you get it wrong you are responsible. They were generous enough to allow me to redo the assignments and told me if I turned them in within a week they wouldn't deduct points for the assignments being late.

I have had very good response. I am graduating in 13 months.

Certain courses can only be taken at certain times (bridge health assessment can't be taken in the summer). I switched pharm with assessment and took pharm in the spring before my didactic courses started and I am so glad that I did that!!! I took 607 and 608 this past summer and have only 2 more writing courses to do. I plan on writing some of my papers for spring over our Christmas break.

I love the program director for adult gero primary care!!

Hope that helps.

I went through the Accelerated BSN program and had an excellent experience. I am in my final semester of the Dual Role program and I truly like it. I don't know about the other tracks but my instructors are very helpful and respond quickly. The instructors post lectures for each chapter and unit and do a chat before the exam. They also post a study guide that focuses your studying. I am not sure about the other tracks but most of the negative comments I have read are not what I experienced. The dual role is an accelerated track so yes it is difficult, I think what most people forget is that you will be responsible for managing patient's lives and prescribing medication, doing procedures like intubation and central lines etc., and running codes. It is NOT supposed to be easy! The Dual Role track at USA is well recognized across the US for how well prepared its students are. Also, the certification exam pass rate last year and the year before was 100%. It does have its quirks but from what I gathered from students in other programs USA's is well put together. It is a highly competitive track because of how well it does. It does require more clinical hours than most because you are doing two tracks at the same time. They also bridge 4 doctoral courses so that when you are finished you are that much closer to your DNP, which I will start this fall. I think we live in an academic society where people want things handed to them rather than having to work hard. Remember that lives are at stake when you start to practice. I feel very fortunate that I will be graduating from USA and would recommend it to anyone.
