University of South Africa doctorate

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

I am nearing the end of my doctoral studies by distance ed at the University of South Africa -- UNISA (Health Sciences). The degree is a D Litt et Phil -- Doctor of Literature and Philosophy. As far as I can tell there are very few nurses in the US with this degree. (I have located just one.)

This is a "thesis only" program for the doctorate, and I must say, I have enjoyed the research immensely and feel like I have gotten a lot of support from my advisors. I'd love to hear with anyone else with experience at UNISA.

My advisor (promoter) asked me if I was going to come to graduation, but it will be in the fall when I am teaching, and the plane fare is very expensive-- more than a year of tuition. I'd love to see the country, and I'd love to meet the faculty, but it doesn't seem feasible right now.

I finally finished! My dissertation was accepted and I'm finally done. I graduate September 25.

Congratulations! :balloons:

So how was your degree accepted at your school?

My degree has been accepted supprisingly well, especially at the state college where I work. The dean of the school of nursing with which we are affiliated did ask me if I thought I'd have trouble getting my degree accepted, but when I said UNISA is listed with the International Network of Doctoral Education in Nursing and a member of Sigma Theta Tau, she seemed satisfied.

I have done some research on international degrees, and think that in the US we are sometimes unaware of the quality of scholarship that exists internationally, in nursing as well as other disciplines.
