UCSF MEPN Applicants for 2010 entry

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

I thought I would start a new thread. I've read quite a bit of the activity from previous classes and I thought it would be great to get a community of support started for those who have applied for UCSF's MEPN program... not just for us now, but for the future applicants who will read our posts! (: (the added bonus is this thread will be in gender neutral territory ;)

Would love to hear the stories of folks who are applying to nursing programs (UCSF and otherwise).

Thanks!

I hear you Sandman...I just posted my job today and it is very, very surreal. Now I'm trying to buy a plane ticket to head out of the country for a while before the program starts. Weird yet thrilling!

haha its funny I had the same urge to take a vacation before the program starts. I have no idea when I'll next be able to. What country are you thinking of escaping to?? I need suggestions.

Hi all,

I've been reading this thread in silence for a while now, but wanted to join in on the online celebration. As soon as someone mentioned that you could call in to hear your decision, I waited about 5 seconds and frantically called. Once I heard the "intend to offer you admission" part, I ran up and down the hallways of my apartment building yelling at the top of my lungs...if my neighbors didn't think I was weird already....

Thankfully, I'm not in the position of deciding between schools (Hopkins, Columbia, Yale are all great, but I can't stand the thought of spending any more time on the East coast), but I do have to hope my girlfriend gets into a San Francisco school (crosses fingers)

A lot of people have mentioned their specialties, but did anyone get into the Advanced Community Health and International Nursing track? I'm pretty sure I was the only one interviewing for it in my time slot on the morning of Jan 29 (I was also one of only 2 guys that morning, but I kinda expected that...). Maybe there are a few more of us out there.

Like some others have mentioned, I've also arranged for a vacation (Hawaii, woot) and just wrote up a description of my job to help my bosses find a replacement. It's super surreal, but equally awesome.

Congrats again to all. I look forward to moving to the fairer coast and meeting many of you.

looking west, welcome! Hope to see you in a few months.

Sandman, I'm looking at doing a medical Spanish immersion in Guatemala for a month or so before school starts. There are several schools in Xela (Quetzaltenango), so I'm deciding between a couple of those. Also, looking to see when plane fare gets cheap again. It went up $200 in one day while I was being indecisive. I figure my last vacation for some time is probably worth that expense!

Nope, looking west, you're not the only one, I'm in for ACHIN, too. But I agree, it is a wee bit smaller in number than the other specialties. Look forward to meeting everyone. :)

Yay! I love that the conversation has turned to travel...I'm in the same boat, deciding where to go and how much time to spend. I had some grandiose plans of spending a month in SE Asia but I've since realized that I can't quit work as early as I had hoped and my money should probably be used on important things, like buying a car so I can drive to 6 a.m. clinicals in the south bay! Now I'm looking at Guatemala and Mexico for about two weeks or so...I like the idea of a Spanish immersion program. I'm going to look into it!

Spanish immersion.. interesting MLIS2MSN. I hadn't considered that but I will now. I was more in the Hawaii frame of mind like looking west :) I wanted just a carefree, snoozing on the beach vacation and then you go talking about bettering yourself professionally and making me feel guilty! jk.. it actually sounds really fun. I guess I'm the only one on here in the critical care/trauma track :( I have this vision in my mind of sitting in an empty classroom with my professor, taking notes while all the NP people are having a lively conversation in the other room (I know, its not like that). Anyway I hope you all manage to get some R&R before the program starts!

Oh and looking west, I'm also a guy and there were I think 3 others interviewing on my day.

Sandman, yes I feel similarly, I am in the Adult Mental Health NP track and I think I haven't read a peep of anyone else in that track here?? Yep the quitting jobs and R&R time is upon us! I plan on my hiking boots scouring every Bay area trail possible. Celebration! Bad news for bosses and PI's. Oh and I am happy to hear someone else here scared the neighbors with jumping and yowling upon getting the good news. I can't wait to meet you all in June. We all survived the gauntlet of this forum!

I am so dizzy with this week's events I just tried to dial my calculator.

Hey everyone, sitting here with the biggest smile on my face reading everyone's posts re their reactions...I was really glad that when I called the administrator said congratulations about three times because I wasn't sure I had heard him correctly...then proceeded to laugh, cry and then feel like throwing up all in the same moment! Was grateful for the email confirmation as well because it all felt very surreal...

I'm in the ACHIN program with HIV/AIDS specialty...it's nice to see a few of us on here...Congrats again to everyone!! e

Who knew that such a weird email would bring so much joy and anticipation! I can't wait until June!! I too have been a lurker and had to join the thread to revel in the celebrations! I will be in the ANP HIV-AIDS specialty. Hopefully road tripping with my boyfriend down the California coast before school starts. Can't wait to meet you all!

Congratulations to everybody! I was a lurker too, because im planning on applying for either the 2011, but more likely the 2012 cohort (haven't decided yet) for the FNP track. Im wondering, for those of you who were accepted, what were some things you did to boost your experience?? I am trying to find some things to do to help w/my application, and also give me good experience before applying (and hopefully entering) the program. I was initially deciding between FNP and the midwifery track, but after a few experiences with my children being sick, and really wanting to be able to help families in my community, and not spend so much time away from my kids, ive decided on the FNP track.

I would be incredibly grateful for any advice you might have for me. And again, congratulations!
