SUNY BUFFALO ABS May 2014

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

I'm looking for others applying to the UB ABS nursing program for this coming May. Past classes have helped each other out and kept each other updated on important information and I'd like to get that going for the May 14 hopefuls!

Hi everyone! So glad I found this forum! I got in too! Congrats to all!

Congratulations! A meet up would be fun!

Hi guys! I got into the ABN program too! To the person who posted about prerequisites for the Spring: I'm taking Microbiology, Patho, and Pharm this Spring. UB did not grant me transfer credit for the Patho course I had taken already. I was already nervous taking Micro and Pharm at the same time, now Patho too... time to get down to business. For NYCnursetosoonbe2014, I moved to Buffalo from NYC earlier this summer and met a lot of great people; I'm looking forward to meeting more in the program. It's only a year and I think Buffalo is a fine place for a rigorous nursing program. It's low key, inexpensive, and cold. The way I see it the colder it is, the more time you will spend indoors studying and not being tempted to play outside! There is fun stuff to do but you have to find it. Chippewa/Allentown will get old real quick. This is a town where you need to make good friends and get on the party lists. I was surprised to find a very large art community here and a decent local music scene. The other thing that really turned me off at first was what I saw as the lack of good food. It seemed like everything is bad pizza and wings at first, but there really are some gems here, you'll know them when you find them. Wegmann's and/or Lexington Coop for groceries is a must. Bonus, if you are like me and don't drive, UB has a free shuttle that goes from downtown to UB South Campus, it's the Blue line, and it stops at the Allen St station. In the warmer months there are some nice bicycle trails here along the river and up in Delaware Park, and South Campus is not a far ride from the Elmwood/Allentown area. Anyway, congrats to everyone!

Haha we have the best wings and pizza here idk what you're talking about!!

Stormborn, I am also taking pharm in Spring. Maybe we can help each other out!

I took Micro last Spring and just finished Patho. It is a lot of info but I find the concepts pretty straightforward. The best advice I can give is read over your notes after class and several times a week but don't try and cram info in your head just read like you would an interesting book. Then when it gets closer to exam time focus on memorizing. It should be easier to memorize after reading over so many times. As you probably know, good study habits and time management are key!

I'm also a visual learner so drawing flow charts helped and I even went as far as drawing pictures of different bacteria and labeling their toxins Lol.

You will do great! Can't wait to meet everyone at orientation. I wonder if we will register for classes then??

So I have a couple of questions, and rather than bug the nursing office right before the holidays I figured I would ask you guys if you know the answers! I didn't make it to any of the info sessions, and I'm thinking some of these were prob answered there :).

1) What is the typical size of each incoming group for the accelerated program?

2) Do we file a 2014-2015 FAFSA since the program starts in 2014, or is the summer 2014 considered part of the '13-'14 school year?

3) Does UB offer any housing assistance/on-campus opportunities for accelerated students? Or do they maintain a roomshare list or something like that for off campus students? I'm thinking that since I'm coming from so far away it might be easier to spend the summer semester on campus until I get a feel for where I want to live, or something like that!

I think that's it for now!

I can only answer number one for you! Typically around 70-75.

I always file a renewal FAFSA every January. I was told my federal loan would be broken up into thirds: third summer third fall third spring. They only bill once in July for the whole summer so it's based on 2014-2015. I would still double check this info with your financial aid advisor when you get a chance.

We also join up with the traditional students in fall so the only really fast paced classes are over summer!! It is basically junior year compressed into summer then fall and spring is a regular senior year.

I didn't realize that's how the program worked, with an accelerated "junior year" over the summer and then a regular fall/spring. That kind of makes me feel better! I wasn't sure what I was actually getting myself into with this program and just how much it would be to take on. (I know it's going to be a lot, though!)

Yeah it made me feel less anxious when I found that out. Is anybody planning on taking their BLS soon? I would like to do mine sometime in the next few weeks before the semester starts cause then I'll be busy with pharm. I thought it would be nice to take it with someone from the program.

I will be taking it soon! Have you looked into details?
