Summer Entry 2012 Accelerated BSN Johns Hopkins

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Okay I have searched far and wide to find a topic relating to this but have only found older ones... I mean come on guys the world isn't really going to end December 2012. :yeah: So here's to the 2012 application cycle!

I have a ton of questions for those who are applying and those who have applied and those who are in the program. Any and all input will be much appreciated. Also just so you know, I will be attending the October 1st open house.

If I were to describe myself, I would say grade-wise I am not the strongest candidate for JHU's nursing program as it is considered top in the nation. HOWEVER I have great experience and recommendations to cancel that out. I am also trying really really hard to make those essays seem great but only 300 words?

So to anyone reading this post, what do you think I can do to make myself a stronger applicant?

Relating to specifically JHU, I have heard a million different things about their program. From "it really sucks and is not worth it" to "best program EVER". JHU is supposed to be a school that is the leader in research and also has a global perspective. Can anyone else tell me what is so special about JHU's nursing program? What is your personal experience with it?

As far as location and campus, I think it doesn't matter as long as the educational program is incredible.

p.s. You are awesome for reading my novel. There have been many a times where I skipped over long posts. :coollook:

I guess it's comforting to hear from others who are in the same boat..lol. Are there still a lot of loan repayment/forgiveness options? I've heard of a lot of hospitals that no longer pay off student loans as part of their 'tuition reimbursement" and instead, they only assist with the tuition of individuals who are both employed and attending school simultaneously. But maybe that's not the case.

The HRSA program for loan repayment actually has been expanded somewhat recently. So you might be able to get loan repayment for working in an underserved area.

For me, I'm lucky in terms of finances. I've been saving money for over a year to go to school so I shouldn't require any financial aid. It is odd that a job I have grown to dislike over the years is going to pay for my career change. I'm a rare case though and it is going to be painful to see large chunks of change come out of my savings.

There are obviously cheaper options like UMD although their program is slightly longer due to having summer off and longer/traditional breaks. I sadly wasn't eligible to apply for UMD for the Fall so my next opportunity would be Spring 2013. The funny thing is if I get into JHU for the Fall, I'd complete an entire year earlier than if I went to UMD in the Spring even though it is only 3 or 4 months later start.

I applied for the merit scholarship, but I'm not too optimistic. It seems very competitive and my GPA is really not great, but I figure you have to at least try. My going to Hop really hinges on it though. I'd love to go here, but I really don't think I can afford it.

I'm thinking about applying to the Fuld Fellowship program as well... I don't know. We'll have to see. I'm still an undergrad, finishing up my degree. It's really hard to have to think about adding more loans on top of what I already owe.

Leenak, That's great that you won't require financial aid! What a relief! I also have some savings I could/will tap into, but at the same time I've also heard people say, 'don't be afraid of student loans because employers will sometimes help you pay them off.' But, I worry with changing economic times, that will change.... even with the HRSA program. Ugh, I don't have a brain for finances so it makes it hard to see the big picture/best strategy.

I don't know if anyone else found out but I got a voicemail at work stating I was accepted to the Summer BSN/MSN program in Midwifery. Hopefully the financial aid will work out and I can go :) Good luck everyone!

I've filled out the FAFSA. Is there anything else I need to do for financial aid at Hopkins?

Yes, you need to fill out their form and send in your tax return and W2's.

You are such a rockstar!!! Sorry for the delayed response... school and traveling have been taking up a lot of my time lately. This information is so great! I was looking at The Standard online, and it seems like an awesome fit for me as well. But, I am not making any decisions until I get down there and explore for myself. Thank you SO SO much for the info! I really appreciate it. I can't wait to get down there and look around for myself :0)

That was meant for you, UR Hopeful!
