Got in... now how to tell my work?

Hello,

I just found out that I got accepted to my PNP program. Yeah! But now I have a delimma...

When I spoke to my boss about it, she didn't seem happy at all! She was worried about the schedule, worried about this, worried about that, etc, etc. Not supportive of it.

I've made arrangements so that I won't have any actual clinical until after this first year. So, it'll just be theory. When should I tell her? Now?? Later? I'm leaning towards telling her now, but I am worried about how to break the news. Any advice, tips, etc, from anyone who has had this problem? I plan on working through the program.

Thanks in advance!

Why tell her if you are planning on working through the program anyways? Will it be affecting your work now?

Congratulations!

I would tell her now. Even though you won't have clinicals for the first year, you may have to adjust your schedule to accomodate time for studying, exams, or unforseeable circumstances that a student encounters. It's unfortunate that she is not more supportive. Education is always valuable!

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

Since I'm doing the Clinical Nurse Specialist through my hospital's College of Nursing, I did tell my supervisor. I'm doing my clinicals by using my PTO for which I'm very lucky. I have 576 hours to do and only have about 60 hours done.

I agree. If you don't tell her now and a problem arises later on, she may be even more upset with you. And why is she getting so bent out of shape because you want to go back to school? I thought all the hospitals were encouraging this?!? I guess it falls back to you're damned if you do, damned if you don't! Good luck with the program anyway!

In total agreement on this with you.

Don't let anyone push you around. If you want to further your education to help you in nursing then just do it. :chair:
