Columbia ETP Program 2012 entry

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hi,

I plan on applying for the anesthesia program at Columbia and I wanted to know how the background of those that have been accepted look like to see if I'm even competitive enough apply.

Thanks!

Yeah, it was pretty surprising to me that she was so confident that everyone who wanted a job as an RN had found one.

From what I've heard from nurses (not related to Columbia) in NYC the job market is just really tough for new grads what with older nurses retiring later because of the economy, as well as several hospital closures/mergers that have put some RNs out of work. (And that's to say nothing of the simple fact that there are lots of nursing schools in the NY area, so there are always lots of new grads.)

I remember hearing something about an ETP student moving out of state to get a job for her required 1 year in the ICU, and then having to move back to NYC to start the anesthesia specialty courses. What a pain!

But, for those of us who plan to go straight through without working as an RN, I think the job prospects are better for NPs.

I too had heard the job prospects are better for NPs. I recently spoke with a recent graduate of the program and they stated they received job offers prior to graduation. Current ETPers seemed to also be confident (at least the ones I spoke with) about finding a job as a nurse while working in the masters portion. Though they may not be able to find one immediately, it seems like within 3 months or so they had found a position. One reason from what I got from the visitors day is because students may be too choosy about their job placement and not open to the experience.

@graceface- What school did you decide to go to instead?

I emailed Jose asking for stats on the % if ETP grads who are able to get full-time jobs after graduating vs. the % of NP grads.

If/when he sends me some, I'll share these stats both here and on the Facebook page.

Just talked to admissions. Looks like they have begun taking people off the waitlist!

cthomson: do you know what specialties and how they are letting people know?

Hi all -

I have some concerns about the difference between a BSN and a BS (with a major in nursing). My friend who works as an ER nurse at NY Presbyterian says she has been told that it is better to have a BSN just because it gives you more of a base in the nursing/clinical aspect.

When I asked another professor that I know at Jefferson's School of Nursing, she said that they are essentially the same thing and that this will not affect job opportunities.

I've seen this topic posted a few times here, but I wanted to see if anyone found out anything differently. I plan on asking Jose also, so if I hear back, I'll certainly post his answer here.

From what I understood, the waitlist is not ranked according to speciality areas. I'm not sure how they are informing waitlisters, but I'm assuming it's by email. Additionally, I was told that everyone should know their status as of March 15. I'm taking that last bit of info with a grain of salt...

Is anyone on here choosing between BC and Columbia? I'm having a really hard time deciding where to go and at this point am looking for any feedback or information that people are willing to share! Thanks :)

Just got an email from Jose saying that Columbia does not keep statistics of how their graduates do in the job market.

Hi everyone! Just a little news for those on the waitlist. I just turned down my spot. I was in peds. Hope that gives you some hope! :)
