Hi,

I plan on applying for the anesthesia program at Columbia and I wanted to know how the background of those that have been accepted look like to see if I'm even competitive enough apply.

Thanks!

i would be interested in hearing about your experience as well jqfish

Hi there! Just joining the discussion as a first time ETP applicant for Peds. I'm excited about the entire process and look forward to seeing how it all pans out...OK OK, when I say "look forward" what I really mean is "I'm incredibly nervous!" Great to have allnurses for support and information :D

Haha, love how we're all on the same threads, cpsnap!

Hopefully we'll get to be classmates at one place or another...:)

cpsnap & LookingAhead - happy to see you here and on the UCSF thread :) Glad to know were all looking around the country for these programs.

I know, it's really fantastic. I feel that there's already a direct-entry applicant community forming. It's interesting to have read past year's threads and to now be in their shoes. I truly hope everyone ends up at the school that is best suited for them, however, it would be pretty great to gain admittance into the programs that we're all working toward together. This application process is quite arduous, but we can do it!

Overall, I'm most worried about the GRE. I feel confident everywhere else and am hoping mayyyybe they'll just forget they ever saw my score, ha!

There really is. I have been reading past threads for so long, learning from them and being excited for them to apply. Now its our turn to take that step...and it is SCARY! But like you said, we can do it.

I took am a little on edge about the GRE but from previous posts/threads I don't think it's a make it or break it component. I feel that a lot of schools want their applicants to at least past their minimum requirements but that doesn't hold them back from denying them entry based just on the GRE score. I didn't do so well myself but hope the rest of my application is strong enough to overcome it.

I totally agree re: the GREs. There are a lot of aspects of these applications that I think are just boxes to be checked - the "scores/stats".

A few years ago I was on the selection committee for a competitive scholarship program, and it was all about the personal statement and recommendations. Yes, you needed to submit transcripts and standardized test scores, but as long as they were within a certain range, the box was checked. I saw plenty of people who had great scores but really underwhelmed in the personal statement, and they rarely got the scholarship.

That said, good luck with the test! It'll be over before you know it.

Hey Everyone

I agree when it comes to the GRE. I was wait-listed this past cycle for Columbia and only got a 1040 on my GRE. Some people were out right denied with 1300-1400 on the GRE. When I asked how to better my application for this cycle, they never mentioned re-taking the GRE...They really do a great job looking at you as a TOTAL package, not just a score. Hope this helps!

Hey KKandes,

What tips did they give you to better your application?

Thanks!

Melevang

They told me to re-construct my essay a bit better...

The application opened up earlier this month :) I'm only finding a small glitch when I go to enter my GPA, it won't save. I'll try to get some tech support to see if they're able to help me out. Anyone running into the same problem?

Hi guys, someone referred me to this forum. I'm just going to lurk and watch you guys - I'm planning on applying to the ETP program for summer 2013, heh. I'm currently getting my PhD in public health & psychology at Columbia. I have to take the science pre-reqs but everything else I have - so I'm just gonna lurk and watch y'all. Best of luck to the 2012ers.
