What do you guys think. I don't quite get how it works even though I read the ad more than once.

I've seen these ads too. PTO hrs are Paid time off and can be used for vacation or sick time or cashed in if you are called off because of low census. I don't think you get vacation or sick days, just PTOs that you can use for either. At least that is how my mother explained it. So when you are hired you get 8 or 10 days off availble to you. Don't some other places already give you this?

The VA has ad in same section offering 5 weeks vacation, 10 Holidays and sick time but I don't remember the amt. Neither ads say a thing about pay and that makes me suspicous that pay is low.

I'm not sure, but it sounds in the original post that this hospital is offering that paid time off "in the bank up front" at the start of employment. Normally, you start with 0 hours and have to earn them a few hours at a time.

At first blush, it sounds like a great recruitment strategy. However, when you think about it, it is just a variation of a sign-on bonus. When it was instituted, did the existing nurses get a sudden equivalent bonus added into their banks? If not, then it isn't very fair to them and I wouldn't want to work for a hospital that treated it's experienced nurses that way.

Also, once you have used up those extra hours in your bank, then there is no incentive to stay ... only more reason to leave to get whatever sign-on bonus is being offered across town.

That's why sign-on bonuses aren't as popular as they once were. People realized they are really a great idea. They reward people for coming, but not for staying -- and you end up offending your experienced staff (which is who you should be valuing the most.)

You are given the hours up front but must sign your life away, work for a certain amount of time or will have to repay all the hours. There is a reason that UPMC is sweetening the pot, they have a bad reputation among nurses and work you like a slave, pay is decent for this area but not enough to work there. After working there through a agency I know never to apply there. Just my 2 cents. The VA does give you 5 weeks vacation the first year but you accrue them as you work, not advanced up front.

I think UPMC should look at VA bennies and pay and try to duplicate them. I worked for them many years ago when they were just Presby. They had great clinical experience, brilliant clinical educators, excellent class to prepare us to take boards. However, being worked to death is not my cup of tea, only lasted two years their.

Think long and hard before taking that offer. I know several people that work (and have worked) there and know for a fact that their "perks" often come with strict rules. For example, I had a friend that accepted their $10,000 sign-on bonus, BUT she had to stay for THREE years and she had to stay in the same dept. for the ENTIRE time! If she were to leave 1 day short of that three years, she'd have to pay the entire amount back!!! Oh and did I mention that she hates her dept??? OOPS!

I've heard a LOT of really BAD stories come from nurses that worked in the UPMC system, especially Presby and Monte.!!!! At first I just thought it was a fluke and maybe those people were a little jaded for whatever reason, but after hearing sooooo many horror stories, I'm beginning to wonder!

Also, I interviewed there and even shadowed for eight hours....couldn't shake the feeling that there was something that people just weren't telling me. Had a really bad feeling!

Hope my humble opinion helps!

P.S. If you want to discuss the other major hospitals in the city, PM me!

Was not the least bit interested in a job there. I actually love my job but I continue to read the want ads from time to time. Just did not understand what the were offering in that ad. Thankyou to all the people who offered to explain it and thank you for your offer of help.
