UPenn accelerated BSN 2011...anyone?

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Published

Just wanted to know how many people here are planning to apply for the accelerated program at UPenn in 2011? (one starts in the summer)

Has anyone who did not get in going to wait and reapply next year?

I will be applying again in the Fall. Penn is my top choice.

Accepted! :)

I applied for the BSN only (originally planned on applying for the BSN/MSN this year, but was not able to take the GRE before the due date). I was wait-listed last year, but applied again this year... with success!

Here are my stats:

BFA from Howard University - 2006

3.45 Undergrad GPA

4.0 Pre-Requisite GPA

RAINN Online Hotline Volunteer

Planned Parenthood Clinic / Advocacy Volunteer

Nurse shadowing experience

Lifeguard, CPR & First Aid Certifications (7 years) - including swim instruction

3 Recommendations

During the time period between last year and this year, I added on the RAINN volunteering, more pre-requisites (in hopes for making the June start date instead of the fall), the shadowing, and a third recommendation from a professor. My essay this time around just updated them on what I have been doing since I last applied.

I'm originally from Philly (born and raised). So last May, while I was visiting my parents, I was able to set up a meeting with Filomena regarding my application. I think meeting with her was a HUGE help bc/ she gave me feedback on my application and what I should consider adding to it. She was great, and gave me a lot of information about the program (including the MSN and PhD programs). I also think it was a good chance to put a face to a name. I left even more determined to get in the second time around! lol

Looking at some of the other stats, mine seems to pale in comparison to others' experience. But I do think that everyone has something to offer and that they are open to a variety of backgrounds.

Good luck to those that will be applying again...it can happen!

What did Filomena recommend adding to your application? I'm in you same boat this time around, but I live in California so I can't really meet with her face-to-face. I emailed her the day I got my rejection, but alas, no word of reply yet. Congrats on your acceptance.

Here are my stats:

GPA undergrad: 3.3 in Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology/Chemistry Minor at UC

Post-bacc: 3.8

GRE: 420V 680Q 3W

7 years working in an orthopedic office on school breaks

1.5 years back office experience as a medical assistant for an OBGYN

1.5 years as a volunteer Doula at SF General Hospital

1.5 years as the service VP of my college sorority - organized multiple community service activities

2 years as a SHOP (Student Health Outreach and Promotion) volunteer at UC

Founding member and VP of Colleges Against Cancer at UC

Help! The only reason that I can see that I didn't get in is my GRE, and the fact that everyone else is just as qualified..

I was going to send you a pm, but I don't have permission, as I don't have over 15 posts.

If you don't mind, what's your email address?...this way I can answer your question...

Sent...subject will say "Allnurses"...and it's from an aol address.

I got it! Thank you so much. I will continue to try to get in touch with Filomena. Unfortunately, I wasn't wait-listed this year either; I am hoping that if I show persistence, then I will get in. I do think I am going to retake the GRE though. I took a Kaplan course the first time around, and was scoring about 150 points higher on verbal..then I bombed test day. I really think it's a game of chance...

Hey I was just accepted into the bsn/msn program there. I have a BUNCH of questions. Is there anyways I could directly email you?

terps, I got into the anesthesia track too. I am definitely going to penn. you can email me if you want. [email protected]

Hiiii everyone, I got accepted into the accelerated program for summer 2011!! I also got accepted into the nurse anesthetist program which I still am having a hard time believing! The only problem is that I'm already 2 weeks into a program at UMD in Baltimore and have no idea if I should withdrawl and accept at penn....any thoughts???

Hi terps, OMGEEE CONGRATS ON YOUR ACCEPTANCE :yeah: I am considering applying to Penn's BSN/MSN program also and I am interested in the nurse anesthetist program. I was wondering what your stats were? I am excited for you, hopefully that will be my post in the next 3yrs lol....Any info will be greatly appreciated :)

CONGRATS TO YOU ALSO SCHOOL24, I would like to know what were your stats also just so I can get an idea of what I need to get into the program. Again I'm happy for you guys...I think its awesome because I thought that you couldnt get into the anesthesia track without doing your 2yrs in ICU first, but this is sooo cool lol...congrats again...:lol2:

I was accepted into Penns accelerated BSN. I didn't apply to the MSN portion at the time because I just could not commit to a specialty....anyway, I see you are interested in Anesthesia....

I am from Philadelphia, but moved to Denver last year and got a job at the Children's Hospital of Denver as an Anesthesia Technician. It has been an amazing experience and I think you would benefit greatly from it. I don't know how easy it is to get this position where you live, and I don't know what your plans are while you apply, but I think you would really learn so much from this job. Because Childrens in Denver is a teaching hospital, many of the residents and students do what techs at other hospitals do, so I would just consider all the hopitals in your area if your interested in this and be aware that job descriptions may vary. - I guess it is one of the few tech positions left that you don't need a certification for?

Anyway, just hoping to help you....

Is anyone going to the Accepted students day Feb 25? I live in Denver at the moment and would love to go buttt......not sure if I can swing the money at the moment...
