I didn't know it was a union hospital. I have heard the GN's start out at $21.00+, but I don't know what they pay for RN's is. $21.00 isn't a whole lot.

21 is comparable for Pennsylvania. You will not find pay of > 25 an hour as a new grad.

I graduated in PA. My starting job in Scranton was 18 base pay an hour. My friend worked @ Hershey. I believe her pay was 20an hour. This was 2 years ago.

Remember, Hershey is a great place to work. They can offer lower pay, b/c most people still would want to work there just because of their reputation. I believe they have magnet status as well.

Hershey starts out at 22.80 approximately for GN's. They are a great educational hospital and offer great benefits, and loan repayment. They also have a great orientation program. Great place to work!

Yep, GNs currently start out at $22.78/hour. However, this will be increased in April when the Union contract is renewed. And from what I'm told, the rate will slightly go up again in July also (as it does every July) to reflect annual review/cost of living adjustment.

Other perk for working at HMC: you get 75% off Penn State tuition for yourself, your spouse, and your children. There aren't many places you can work where you only have to pay 25% of college tuition for your whole family.

Also, parking is free!

What does the rate increase to once you are an RN?

I could be wrong, but I don't believe it does. I just got hired there myself and the recruiter told me that although my current rate is listed as $22.78, I will be receiving another letter in April reflecting the Union increase. She said I will start working in June and then I will get another increase in July with all of the other nurses and then increases will be yearly after that. So that leads me to think there is no change in salary after passing the NCLEX.

That sucks. Usually once you pass the boards you get a bump of at least a dollar. What's it going up to in April? What's the shift differential? How are the benefits?

Yeah, I've seen it both ways at different hospitals - ones that start you at a GN rate and change it to RN rate, and others that just start you at a new grad rate and keep it there. If I find out my impression about HMC is incorrect I'll definitely let you know.

I asked what the increase will be in April and the recruiter said that is something the Union still has to negotiate. So whenever I hear something official I'll post here.

Shift differential is $2.00 nights and $3.00 weekends.

I think the benefits are good for this area. Here's a breakdown of what it currently costs for an employee + spouse to give you an example:

- Dental $3.74 per paycheck. Free exams every 6 months.

- Vision $0.63 per paycheck. Free exam every year. Free glasses every 2 years or contacts every 1 year (for both you and a spouse - so I can get free frames every 2 years and so can my husband). Discount at the on-site optical shop.

- Highmark Blue Shield Health Insurance $56.47 per paycheck. Covers what you would expect. Everything considered "preventative" is free. Office copays are $20. Utilizes the HRA account system.

There is a fitness center on site that costs $19.50 per month. Spouses can also join for the same rate.

Good luck in your decision! I really do think Hershey is a great place to work, I've worked here for almost 6 years as a lab tech and I am looking forward to continuing my employment as a nurse in June. This hospital is consistently on the forefront of technology and research and has a very good reputation. There are so many plans for expansion too with the children's hospital and the cancer center coming soon. Of course this means there is constantly construction around here which can be annoying, but the upcoming advances and changes are exciting.
