Anyone Starting At UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing?

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Published

This thread is for anyone who is trying to get into, currently at, or graduated from Shadyside School of Nursing in Pittsburgh!

Thanks for that information. I'm applying to the daytime/full-time program. The recruiter at the nursing school told me that clinicals can start as early as 6:00 a.m. I assume they could go as late as 6:00 or 7:00 pm. Does that sound about right?

My daughter's school has no before-school program. However, she's normally on the bus by 7:00 a.m., so I guess this would only be a problem if I were assigned to a clinical that started between, say, 6:00 and 7:30 a.m. You are smart to use a daycare, because they don't have all the closing dates for school holidays, etc. and you an usually pay an extra per diem for a before/after school kid to be there for the occasional full day. I haven't found a daycare that takes kids over age 11. Daycares may be expensive, but I have fond memories of those years when I always knew that my duaghter had a place to go where she knew everyone even on days when there was no school.

When I was 12, my alarm woke me at 6:00 a.m. I was dressed and out the door by 7:00 to ride the city buses to school while my parents still slept. What a different world that was. Of course, it wasn't as though I were alone in the house. But -- now we're really talking about fond memories! -- a time and place where even first graders could wait at bus stops unattended or walk to school on their own because crimes against children were so rare. I was on my own for getting to school in the city itself (!) from second grade through the end of high school. Sometimes there no other kids waiting at my bus stop. Imagine, in all those years neither my sis nor I were ever approached by strangers, nor were our schools/parents giving out warnings because of it happening to other kids. If only we could give our kids that world...

clinicals at UPMC Shadyside are from 7-4 but you are supposed to be there by 645

let me tell you all from experience that anything can happen.. i took the test last minute applied last minute and easily got a slot.... now that being said even if you didnt get offered one but you know you are on the list then whatever you do work on your clearances and all the other things because on my first day of orientation my class dropped 20 students becuase of compliance issues and the few people waiting in the wings that had everything straight got in at the last second.... also keep bugging them because i actually finally had to go pick up my acceptance letter the same day as the information session for accepted students... now i know this may make it seem like they are a tad bit unorganized but once you get through the red tape it really is a great progam... good luck everyone

I don't know anything about daycares close to Presby, but I can recommend the Tendercare on Center Ave a few blocks from Shadyside Hospital. T-care is a chain, but it's a small chain and seems to put more resources into recruiting and training staff than others. We never went to that branch, but my daughter attended two others when we lived in the South Hills.

Thanks for the insight re applying and clearances. I have had to get them in the past so I could go on field trips with my daughter's school, and it seems like the PA ones are taking longer than they used to.

i talked to natalie and joann and they both said full time is completely full, no spots left. to the person who asked, my high school gpa was a 3.9 and my college gpa from two years at wvu was a 3.8. and yes, joanne said it is possible to transfer from part time to full time part way through although it can be difficult to find a spot. she said that would take 3 years where as full time would be 2 and part would be 4. so idk. not what i was hoping but better than nothing. if you're worried about your application call natalie or joann. it wouldnt hurt to check up on things, it seems they are quite unorganized.

has anyone received confirmation that they have been accepted for full time yet? if they are full you would think people have received letters letting them know they are part of the full time class by now(if the above statement is indeed factual). i had talked to natalie a couple weeks back, she let me know that the application materials were complete, but did not mention anything about time frames. i did apply last minute but am hopeful as my lowest test score was 93 and i had two 99s. some of the posters suggest that its first come first serve. can anyone confirm this? not thumping my chest or anything, but it would seem ludicrous to fill the class with early entrants scoring 75+ and those retesting better when there are those later to the game with much higher scores.

if anyone has received letters that have been accepted, please post.

if past students accepted into the fall program could give us an idea when they received their letters, it would help the anxiety levels of all those waiting... we would all be very thankful. :)

i might be mixing ip schools, but i believe some have been admitted to fulltime earlier this spring.

i was accepted for fall in april or may i believe? if you read back in this thread, there are a few others on here. there have been a few orientation type things already, they've started cpr classes and whatnot, but there are still slots for those type things coming up.

the school does have rolling admissions, which is why i was sure to take one of the first test dates available for the semester i wanted to apply. i did not want them to fill with people before my admissions materials were received. i don't know if they just send you out an admission offer for the next semester if they're full or what?

audrey: unfortunately, my daycare is closed for holidays and for a lot of "inservices", just like a public school. . .very frustrating. i haven't figured out what i'll do about that. put an ad on craigslist for a babysitter, maybe for those days? i may end up switching daycares though.

Thanks for the information. Unfortunetly I had been layed off after the early start dates for testing, and only made the decision late in the testing period. While I did score very high, I can understand if the classes were filling up with people waiting from the previous year. I guess my hope now lies in getting early acceptance for March. Unfortunetly I don't have the luxary of waiting much longer than that, as I need to get a career change moving quickly. (savings will only keep my head above water so long)

The only frustrating part ofthe whole process I guess is the schools inability to give solid information on "dates" The waiting game is bad when every day you open the mailbox hoping for some news. High School Seniors attending regular universities usually know where they have been accepted and are making plans before they even graduate. I was hoping I would know something sooner so I could plan out my job searches more carefully.

I do thank you greatly though for your input. At least now I understand the addmission process a little more.

Shadyside SON clinicals are done on Tues. Wed and Thurs for the full time program. You do prep for 4 hours on tues, and have clinical 6:45-3 or 3:30 on Wed. and Thurs. If you do the part time program, you have prep on friday from 5:30 - 9:30, then clinical 6:45-3 or 3:30 SAturday and Sunday every OTHER weekend. The only time you will have clinical at different times is when you his your Transitions class at the end, then you follow your preceptor's schedule. HOpe this helps.

mommyjskns... did you graduate already? i only ask because i am a student now and there are some that follow that schedule... but some that dont. a lot of things are changing now that they are starting bigger classes and people that had to take a break are coming back in. i am sure this is the reason for the change... they have to find space for everyone..lol i am only speaking for the full time program... i dont know about the part time evening program as i am not in it and have never had any interest in their scheduling. there were students that were griping about the change so we got the "you signed up for the full time program and that means you have to be available full time" talk.... followed by joannes " there are no clinical requests allowed and the schedule is the schedule... read your handbook" lecture :chuckle

that is why when i replied i gave the general hours not the days because at this point it is just the luck of the draw what your days will be.

No, I didn't graduate yet. I do know though that the current 200 level courses all follow that schedule. In N102, the schedule is a little bit different because you only have clinical once a week, but I'd be interested in finding out if they are switching it. I have several friends in the full time program and no one has heard anything. That would be awful if they changed it. I will say that they are NOT very flexible about missing clinicals no matter what the reason. Their philosophy is that this is the way it is when you are a nurse..............not sure if I agree with that, though. How do you like the school? I know you just started in March, right? What teachers do you have?

lol i think they are changing it with us... they are changing lots of things with us...... i think my class is their personal lab experiment... i actually love it though just finished all my finals and found out that i managed to pull off a 4.0 so i am happy about that... kind of a bummer that today is the last day of this semester and the new one starts monday! lol oh well. anyway you are probably safe as far as your schedule goes because from what i understood it they werent making any changes for others just a what they are going to do from now on thing...

by the way did you loose a lot of people your first semester because my class is dropping like flies?
