Reccomendations for post immunizations??

I am just a nursing student, so I could be wrong. But from research Ive done because of having two young children, I would not openly advise of tylenol after every vax. It should only be used if the child gets a fever that wont come down. No need to give a medicine with acetaminophen as well as being loaded with artificial dyes and other crap unless necessary. For pain, the parent can give a rubbing alcohol massage around the vax site. I do believe that only an MD can advise what meds to take or an RN who has been instructed to do so by an MD. So unless the PED has asked you to review medication with the patient, I wouldnt. If the patient has a reaction due to some history noted on their medical history that you are unaware of, then it could fall back on you.

Also, all docs are required to get informed consent before giving approval or any procedure. If the parents werent even aware of what vax is being given, ask them if they are aware of the possible side effecs and reactions. It could be that the PED asked the parent if they needed to review the info, and the parent could have already reviewed on a previous visit and felt they didnt need the info again.

I work in a pedi office and am giving vaccines all day. I was just wondering if u routinely recommend tylenol for after the shots and beginning at what age? Also, I've worked with a couple providers who I know for a fact explain the vaccines to the parents. However the other day I was working with a new provider and when I went in the room the parent didn't even know what vaccines their child was getting. Am I suppose to be explains them?? Any help would be appreciated. I'm a new nurse and just want to know what u usually say before and after the shots. Thanks in advance!

Well, to be frank, if the parent doesn't know what vaccines the child is to be getting you shouldn't be giving them. Consent is required for vaccines. Federal law mandates that Vaccine Information Sheets (VIS) be given to patients/parents PRIOR to vaccination.

All the standard childhood vaccines are on the list. If this isn't happening at your practice, it needs to start.

I am the one who gets consent I have them initial a paper. I also distribute the vis.. So I did inform them of what vaccines the child was receiving I just felt they should have known. Unless doctor told them and they just forgot...

The use of fever reducing medication has been discouraged for a few years now as studies showed it may interfere with the immune response needed for effectiveness of the vaccine. The only exception I am aware of is if the child has a history of febrile seizures or a fever greater than 100.4 after administration.. As a nurse who routinely gives vaccines it is my job to answer questions parents may have and I want them to know what we are giving their child and why.
