OHSU's Accelerated BSN program 2012

U.S.A. Oregon

Published

Hi! I live in Portland, OR and want to apply for OHSU's accelerated bachelor's program for nursing, but there isn't a lot of information out there on it. I've browsed their website, but it doesn't answer all the questions I have. I would love to know exactly what they judge you on in order to get in. I know your GPA and essays are extremely important, but do they care if you have had work history, or your CNA license or not? I don't have any experience, but have a 4.0 so far in my pre-reqs, and a 3.6 in my previous bachelor's degree (in a social work field). Anyway, I want to apply for the program to enter it in the summer of 2012, so I can finish up my pre-req's and what not. I am just wondering what else I need to do, because I really want in. Also, how much does it cost, and being accelerated, is it 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, or what? I have two kids I'm going to need to find childcare for while I'm in school, so I just want to know what I'm in for. anyway, if you can help me answer any of these questions, I would so greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

I was also told that they will be mailing out letters next week. I got a letter this week from Registrar and Financial Aid about a tax thing and was super disappointed it wasn't about admission ;(

If they mailed them today on Friday the 13th, I wonder who's good luck would be someone else's bad? AH! Fingers crossed.

The ABSN starts June 2012 and ends Aug/Sept(?) 2013. OHSU's three year/"slow Bac"/normal BSN program, not requiring a bachelor's and with summers off, starts in the fall. The letters for that one are supposed to come out June 1st. I applied to both but would much rather get into the ABSN.

Good luck!

I know we're all sitting on pins and needles waiting. Good luck to everyone!

I surely hope they mail out the letter Friday, so we can get it by Monday >.<. am doubtful though been anxiously waiting for too long here sniffle..>

I think they also had a fall ABSN cohort last year. They pulled a number of people off the wait list for the cohort, if I remember correctly.

Hi everyone, I'm glad I stumbled across this forum! OHSU's ABSN is also my first choice. This past week has also been agonizing for me. Admissions also told me around the 15th, so today being the last working day of the week, I was constantly checking my email throughout the day. Then I decided to call them late in teh afternoon, and they claim the're currently "processing" the decisions and should be sent out by next week friday via mail, which means it's possible to have to wait for another 1.5 weeks--yikes!

---rmfornursing, I know what you mean, this is rather late...2 months is not enough time to take care of things, esp when moving from out of state. Currently scouting out housing near OHSU/portland, anyone else on the hunt?

---berkeleygirl, I asked about email notification specifically and they said thorugh the mail.

Best wishes to all of you.

Thank you to everyone who keeps us posted on the latest admissions news. It is much appreciated. I too think that this time crunch is becoming quite unreasonable. For those who do get accepted, it looks like they will have less than two months to get situated. At least I'm just across the border in Washington State, but I couldn't imagine living much farther away from Portland.

daruma - I have been casually browsing craigslist for apartments and rooms for rent. I'm not familiar with Portland, but I have a friend that lives there that said the neighborhoods of Beaverton and Hillsboro are ideal for OHSU students. If I'm lucky enough to get accepted I plan on making a weekend trip down there to look at places to rent.

Daruma and jessel02 - Hi! I live in the SE Portland Hawthorne neighborhood and love it. It is close to OHSU by bike or bus. I usually bike downtown and it takes me about 20 minutes. The SE Belmont and SE Division/Clinton neighborhoods are great too. Beaverton and Hillsboro are suburbs of Portland, whereas the Hawthorne/Belmont/Division areas will give you more of the Portland feel. Multnomah village is a cute part of SW Portland and there are some apartments/housing around SW Barbur Blvd (underneath the OHSU tram) which you can find some cute pockets. Anyway, hope this helps and good luck!

I live in Portland currently and I wanted to tell you not to live in Beaverton or Hillsboro if you are attending OHSU. They are far away and the problem with OHSU is parking - it sucks. Take a bus or tram. As far as I know the 8 is the only bus that goes there. Here is a link to the route and schedule for this bus:

TriMet Interactive Map

TriMet: Bus Line 8-Jackson Park/NE 15th Map and ScheduleIt goes from N Portland to NE Portland to downtown to OHSU.

You could also do what embracechange does and live close in SE Portland and bike downtown and then catch the 8. I don't recommend trying to bike up the hill to OHSU.

The tram goes from south waterfront straight to OHSU so that is another neighborhood (though very expensive). Just a thought.

Good luck!!

embracechange and Andee137 - Thanks for the good information. I kinda assumed the parking situation at OHSU would be terrible, so I did look into riding the MAX and/or buses. Unfortunately it seems like housing gets more expensive the closer you get to OHSU. Are there any moderately priced apartments that are located in a good area to bike/take the MAX/ride the bus to OHSU? Also, to add a monkey wrench to the equation, I have a dog that I will be bringing with me. Thanks again for your help!

As everyone else is suggesting, it's best to plan on biking and/or using public transportation to get to the hill! I've worked at OHSU for a few years and use public transportation most days. There is public parking but it's around $11/day.

The two best ways to get there are the #8 bus from downtown or the tram. The #8 is the only bus that runs all day and has frequent service. The tram starts fairly early and runs until 9pm. I currently take a bus (#35 along Macadam) to the tram which is pretty fast! The streetcar also stops right next to the tram.

There are express busses that go to OHSU from various parts of Portland (#61, 64, 65, 66, 68). They only run during regular commuting hours so are a pain if you need to stay late (some stop at 6pm) or leave midday. I sometimes drive to street parking at the bottom of the hill and then catch an express bus up the hill.

I lived in Beaverton for a few months and took the MAX to the Goose Hollow stop and the #68 up the hill. It's not a quick commute! Around an hour and a half each way for me... I wouldn't recommend it.

If I get accepted to OHSU's ABSN program, I'll definitely be moving closer to campus. Jessel02- I'll also be trying to find dog-friendly housing... hopefully not too hard to do!

@jessel02 I live in NE near 22nd and Broadway and it is a short walk (7 blocks) to get to the #8 bus. It really depends on what you mean by moderately priced. What is your price range? I know there are a lot of places that will rent you a room in a house for really cheap ($400-$500) but you would have roommates. You could possibly even find one like that really close to OHSU - there is a lot of student type housing on the hill. If you want your own apartment you are probably looking around $700-$900 depending on where and what size. I recommend checking out craigslist for either situation.

jessel02 - I rent a room around SE 50th and Hawthorne for $350.. it's small, I have 2 roommates, and we have dogs and cats, big yard, close to everything... just to give you an idea. I've lived around NE Glisan and 60th also, which is also a fine bus/bike commute and a friend and I rented a house for $525 each. So if you're fine with roommates, you can find something within the $350-550 price range. I know a few people who even have rent as low as $250 if you're willing to have 3-4 roommates (with your own room). People are really dog and cat friendly here, so you shouldn't have a problem finding a place that will let you have a dog. Andee137 is right on with apartment pricing, and craigslist is where I've found all my housing since living here the last 3 years.
