OHSU's Accelerated BSN program 2012

U.S.A. Oregon

Published

Hi! I live in Portland, OR and want to apply for OHSU's accelerated bachelor's program for nursing, but there isn't a lot of information out there on it. I've browsed their website, but it doesn't answer all the questions I have. I would love to know exactly what they judge you on in order to get in. I know your GPA and essays are extremely important, but do they care if you have had work history, or your CNA license or not? I don't have any experience, but have a 4.0 so far in my pre-reqs, and a 3.6 in my previous bachelor's degree (in a social work field). Anyway, I want to apply for the program to enter it in the summer of 2012, so I can finish up my pre-req's and what not. I am just wondering what else I need to do, because I really want in. Also, how much does it cost, and being accelerated, is it 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, or what? I have two kids I'm going to need to find childcare for while I'm in school, so I just want to know what I'm in for. anyway, if you can help me answer any of these questions, I would so greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Hello happiness and pdxrose,

Optimism will prevail...good luck!!!!! Have a wonderful day

I just found out that the Kfalls OHSU BSN campus doesn't send out their letters until next week! So another week of waiting....

@aprilshower.emma - can you post the links to the loan programs you were talking about? I am on the waitlist for OHSU's ASBN and I am not really sure what to do about money. I know that financial aid won't cover everything but how do I make sure my tuition will be covered if I am not accepted currently? What if I get in a few days before classes -is that enough time to find private loans? What did you do? Thanks!!!

Hi fellow waitlisters,

Has anyone contacted OHSU School of Nursing regarding specific date(s) or a time frame in which OHSU starts to notifying waitlisters of any potential openings for the ABSN Summer/Fall Cohorts? The wait is torture to say the least! THANK YOU!

Hi Andee137,

Sorry for the delayed response. I have to do a little digging through some paperwork to locate the various websites of private financial institutions/banks that offer private loans with low interest rates. Again, sorry for the delay and have a great night!

No worries. Thank you so much!

hi llh5057,

thanks for sharing so much. just a couple questions - i couldn't tell if you were saying that more of the waitlisters were accepted for fall rather than summer. is that true? also, your description of the program seems so different from sarabear44's post at the beginning of this thread (spring 2011). she made it seem really balanced with free time for personal interests, etc. does that feel true for you or do you feel like you are basically living at school? thanks!

hi

does anyone know what specific date(s) or time frame in which ohsu starts to notify alternates of any potential openings for the absn summer/fall cohorts? thank you

Hi Andee137,

I am so sorry but I have misplaced the website information for private lenders. I will continue my search though! Have a wonderful evening

That's OK :) Let me know if you find it. Thanks!

Hi everyone,

after some intense and awful wrangling I have decided to give up my spot, so here's to hoping that one of you waitlisters gets it! I just wasn't ready to take out over 40k in private loans. I'm probably going to apply again next year and try to save up (and do better scholarship research) in the meantime. In any case, I'm sad I won't be meeting you in real life this year, but thanks to all of you for your wisdom and ideas. And good luck to the waitlisters!

@nursesarak You do have time to have a life outside of OHSU. I just turned 23, so I am still in my young adulthood exploring and going out phase. It is an intensive program, without a doubt. It depends on what grades you are comfortable with getting (that will depend on how much you will be studying, and how much time you will have outside of class). It's not too bad, but it isn't easy. I am a type A personality, and most of us are in the program, so we put in a lot of time, but yes, there is time on the weekends to catch up with friends and go away for the weekend. Each person has their own experience in the program, which is why Sara's view is different than mine. Yes, they accepted more waitlisters last year for the fall cohort, because the waitlist became the fall cohort. The fall cohort was literally just started last September, and I can't tell you how many waitlisters will get in for summer and fall. I can tell you that people will get in off of the waitlist. Numbers are variable. Depending on what quarter you are in, you will have more, or less time for self care. Right now, I am at school everyday, generally on a minimum, 5 hours a day. On clinical days, I am at the hospital for 9. Like I said, it is different from everyone. The 3rd quarter for us has just been extremely busy. I hope this clears up what you were asking.
