Applicants to Portland area schools

U.S.A. Oregon

Published

Greetings fellow future nurses! I just mailed my application packets for Mt. Hood CC, Clackamas CC, and Portland CC today and excited to be done with them. I have my proctored essay for OHSU this Wednesday and am a little worried because I have NO idea what is going to be asked. I haven't been able to get any feedback on what is on any of the essays. I am also applying to Chemeketa but am probable wasting my time as I am missing 2 of the pre-recs required there that aren't required at the OCNE schools. Well, the worst they can say is no, right?

Anyway, the Oregon Nursing Programs sections has been a little dead lately so I was hoping to spark some dialogue. This is my first year applying and I'm already getting a little stressed. I kind of have a lot riding on getting in somewhere next fall. My fiance and I are kind of planning on it. I'm hoping that doesn't backfire! How's it going with everyone?

Anyone know how many alternates CCC goes through on average? I'm still hopeful!

Or if anyone knows how many people were interviewed so I have some idea how many people are on the waitlist, I would appreciate the information :)

Sasafras,

They said they interviewed 80 people when we did the Q & A session.

CCC interviewed 76 people I think I heard. I'm a student there and my clinical instructor was on the interview team and she said they had quite a few people not show up, which is really lame considering that if they had just let CCC know they weren't coming, the school could've called other people to come interview who didn't initially get an invite.

Katinthehat-Wow only 76?? Do you happen to know how many of the 40 from previous years went to other schools?

@ katinthehat8914 - I was one of the people that did not show up for the interview at CCC, but I did let them know. I got accepted to PCC and was waitlisted at OHSU, which were my top 2 choices. I thought I would try and give other people a chance to interview. I called several times and could not get a person on the phone so I left a message, and also emailed them, without response. I couldn't tell if they did not receive my declination or were upset that I was turning down my interview.

If Clackamas is upset that people were turning down interviews they should really consider moving their selection process up to coincide with the other schools. Every other program in the Portland area had already sent out acceptance letters before CCC even had an interview. They had to expect that people would be turning down interview spots being so late in the process.

When I went to the interview the ladies told us that there were 90 interviews total and that everyone was either going to be invited or an alternate. They also had had already 2 decline by the time I had my interview. My interview was on the first day and was round 3 or 4. So I am sure by the last day more had declined or not shown up.

@ portland medic - You did exactly right and if they didn't get someone to come in to interview instead of you, then that's certainly their own fault. I know they did have cancellations that they were able to call in more people, so yours definitely may have been one of them. : ) They did do things pretty late this year, even more so than last.

@Sasafras0123 - You know I really don't have an exact number for you for a usual number of people who decline... But I know they have called people in the past up to the very first week of school to join the cohort.

@katinthehat - Glad to hear they were able to interview more people. I hope my declination allowed someone else a chance to be interviewed.

So I got into Clark and PCC. I actually live in Vancouver, but I still want as much input as possible before I commit to one program or the other. I have heard a few good things about Clark's program and nothing bad. But I seem to have only found very limited opinions on PCC's program and a fairly big one (on this forum) that is poor. I have yet to talk to an acquaintance who just finished their first year at PCC, but I have a bunch of questions for them. Some good advice I've heard is choose the program with the best clinicals. Is there any input from anyone browsing this forum?

Just wanted to let everyone know that I was offered a spot for the BSN program at OHSU Portland campus today and am accepting, so that is one more spot at PCC that will open up. Good luck to those still waiting to hear! Hang in there!

Congrats Portland Medic! See you there. :)
