NICU to OR Nursing

Hello All,

I've been a NICU nurse for a while now and really enjoy it.

However, I have an opportunity to start a Periop 101 Training Program. I'm confused as to whether I should take that leap or not.

I would appreciate it if someone could give me advice on their Perioperative Nursing experience or if any of your guys have transitioned from NICU to OR - how it was?

Thank you:)

You state you enjoy the NICU. How has this opportunity presented itself? Did you seek it out? Are you looking to leave the NICU? Just curious, but if you enjoy where you are and aren't getting burned out, I would focus on growing where you are.

I did seek out the opportunity as they provided a sufficient amount of training and the staff seemed amazing. I have the opportunity to go to another NICU with a better work environment. I keep going back and forth about the pros and cons of each position but cannot make a decision.

If you do the periop program you can always work in a pedi OR if you like kids. You will not get the same exposure to the critical pt care in the OR as you do in the NICU though. You will have a steep technical learning curve though. If you dont like it you can always go back to NICU while knowing you didnt like it. If you never try it then you may always wonder......
