New Grad here got OR acceptance offer tranining

Hi. I just got an offer to be in OR and I just graduated from an ADN School. I am so confused now what to do. I also got offered a job at ICU and Peds. Can someone give me some advie. Pros and Cons at OR. I am very social and just wondering if my personality would hinder regarding patient interaction. Some say accept it because it is such an opportunity and the other floors are easier to get into. Can I also ask isn't hard to get a full time OR job unlike an ICU or Peds floor. Can you make extra money since the rate is not night rate (is that where the on call shifts come into). Please advise this new grad student. Thanks.

I think that you have to really consider what your interests are. Have you had the opportunity to observe in the OR and shadow someone...if so, did you like what you saw? As far as it being hard to get a full-time job in the OR, depends on where you live.Around here(northeast) they will take a new grad into the OR and yes, call shifts are where you can make some extra money. There are also shift differentials. I love the OR but it's a different beast from the floors. You do get to interact with patients, it's just a small amount of time so actually a social type of person would be able to establish a rapport fairly quickly. To work in the OR, you need to be able to think on your feet and to not take things personally. Don't get me wrong, no one should be verbally abusing you, but when things start to go badly with a patient, some docs get kind of terse. Good luck in what ever area you choose!
