I am looking for some ideas on frog-legging a patient. We have a surgeon who would like some kind of device to help support frog-legging. We recently had some nerve damage due to a patient being positioned like that for only 45 minutes. Please share any ideas that you have for supporting the legs in this position.

Thanks!

What kinds of surgeries are you doing that require frog legging? Just curious:)

The radical prostatectomies we do require the legs to be froglegged for 3-4 hours. What we do is take 3-4 white towels and roll them up. We tape them and place them under the thighs of the patients to help support this position. We also tape across the feet from side to side to hold that position. Pink heel pads are also used. It gives very good support and the patients don't seem to complain later about numbness or ?

We use it in urology, but this happened in a plastics case, for inner thigh lipo...

Thanks:) We always use padded stirrups for urology cases. We do very little plastics and almost no lipo where I am.

I agree with Shodobe (as usual) I've taken bath blankets and rolled them, and slid them under the knee/thigh area to support the hips.

One ortho doc I knew was concerned about that external rotation at the hip, when frogged.

The rolled blankets support the legs nicely. You can always slide them up or down, in or out, to fit the situation and anatomy of the situation. And they're nice and soft.

I've not done it in a while, but put the soles of the feet together seems more anatomic.

A little tape, maybe a gel pad or two, and you should be good to go!

In my practice frog-leg used only in CV - to harvest veins for CABG. We use blaket rolls of different height. The talest will be under the knees...like a pyramid, plus some tape. Never had any problems....

We also use bath blankets under the thighs (for a few gyne procedures where you need access there but also abdominal access). I also like to use a pink pad around the feet to keep them from slipping apart. (put soles of feet together, place pink pad under, and do up velcro around the top). Not had any problems that I've heard about.
