Foley Catheters and Erections

Specialties Operating Room

Updated:   Published

On occasion in the OR, when catheterizing a male patient, the pt becomes erect. My nurse manager says we cannot put a foley into an erection. All the surgeons and other nurses I work with say to continue with the catheterization and that the erection facilitates the process.

I am trying to find evidence supporting either one of these statements or both.

Any ideas?

Believe it or not, I've never had this problem arise(wink) when it came time to put the foley in. I've had a few male patients get erections before they are put under, but we just deal with it professionally and try not to cause undue embarrassment for the patient.

No, my problem seems to be either male with strictures, males with unruly and wily foreskin and once in a while, the hide and seek. This is usually in a very obese male patient.

All I know is, I'm grateful that we don't put foleys in under pts are asleep. Both for their sake and mine!

WOW-after watching the u-tube video folly's and this discussion, I told my wife and Daughter ( she's a Nurse) do not let those guys cath me no matter what!

It is the most despised and feared procedure men have to face and I for one will not let it happen-Barbaric doesn't even cut it-primitive is more like it. It's just plain sick and in my humble opinion used to excess.SHUDDER!!!!

Hey,

I have done hundreds of ICP's and rarely do they not get an erection when reaching the prostate.
