Breaking in to new OR

Specialties Operating Room

Published

Hello, I've been an OR nurse for three years now and recently started a new job. Needless to say I can't stand it. The staff are rude and unfriendly and after being there for only two months I am staffing a room by myself. I was told I would be on orientation for six months. My biggest complaint is that at this facility we interview the patient in the operating room and anesthesia has no consideration for turn overs and they bring the patient back to the room whenever they feel like it. I have voiced my concerns to management about only being there for two months and not really knowing policy and where supplies are at and it seems to go in one ear and out the other. To add to this I was relieved 45 mins late today because the charge nurse forgot to sign someone to relieve my scrub and I. Does anyone have any good suggestions for coping with this situation? On a side note I loved my previous OR job but had to leave it behind while my husband goes to grad school.

In addition to your current job, start working per diem at another hospital to see which hospital is better. If you like the new hospital better, work full-time there and quit your current job.

Another option: Work night shift. Night shift O.R. is usually easy money.

Yes, I agree with the above..plenty of other ORs out there..cut your losses and run, because this one is toxic.

Oh, and the next time you move to a new town, don't sign up for full-time until after you know that the O.R. is good place to work. Work per diem first. It is easy to switch from per-diem to full-time.

The nice thing about per diem is that if you hate the place, you don't have to resign. You just magically "disappear" from the face of the Earth :)
