Yale GEPN 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey everyone! Now that applications have been out for a while, has anyone started the process of applying for the Yale GEPN program? I hope that your applications are going well if you have! Also, if there are any current GEPN students that happen across this thread, if you have time, feel free to share your experiences in the program and any tips you may have :) Thanks!

Hi all! I was wondering if any current GEPNs can shed some light on the interview process. I'll be in Rishikesh India studying yoga at an ashram, and I'm trying to make sure that I secure the right internet access (as it will be the middle of the night there). Do they just send you a date and time? Or do they ask you which dates/times you prefer? Is it a phone call or a video chat? How are we notified that we have gotten interviews?

Thank you so much!!

I'm not a current GEPN student (Yale is the only rejection I got haha), but I did interview with them. Interviews are either over the phone or in person, I haven't heard of anyone doing video chats. I believe they sent me a list of dates and times to choose from and I had to rank them. And they will email you when there is an update to your application which will be a letter saying whether or not you received an interview.

Also, their interviews are really detailed. I remember being asked very detailed questions about my essays that I was not prepared for so make sure you really review what you wrote in your essays if you do get an interview!

Do you think it hurts you in any way to choose the option the have the interview by phone rather than in person?

I don't think so (they say it doesn't) but I had a phone interview and didn't get in so I can't be sure. I think that your interview answers definitely need to be more prepared if you are having a phone interview because you can't express yourself through body language or sit and think for as long so that's something to consider. But I don't think it makes or breaks an applicant

Where else did you apply?

Where else did you apply?

I applied to Columbia, UPenn, Case Western, Oregon Health and Science University, MGH, Northeastern, Yale, Vanderbilt and a couple others that I'm not remembering right now. I am now attending Columbia's MDE/DNP program

Hey everyone,

If it is the same as last year, 12/20 we logged into our application to see if you get a interview or not. They will tell you the date, time, and faculty you interview with. You do not have the option to change the date/time at all. You can either accept to attend in person or phone (no video). I know plenty of people who get accepted who did phone interviews. I would highly recommend coming in person though if you can. They do an amazing job of letting you learn about the school and providing you information. They have a student panel where you can ask anything you want to students. Yale really cares about it being a good fit for you. Last year we had a session on history of the school, overview of the first year, a specialty specific session, student panel, financial aid resources panel, and probably something else I am forgetting.

The interview itself really varies based on who is interviewing you. Mine only asked me about 3 questions and we mostly talked about what had lead me to this point, why Yale, why psych, and what I think would be challenging for me personally and professionally in the field.

Good luck! Let me know if anyone has further questions.

Hi! How long after the interview until you heard a decision back?

Thanks!

Does anyone know how much the whole program is going to cost?

@Mjc2005 We were supposed to hear back on March 1, but they sent out decisions early on Feb 27. So about a month after the interviews! Good luck!

Also, I am a current GEPN and I remember how helpful these threads were throughout the interview process. So if any of you have questions, I am happy to help! The waiting game is worse than the actual application process, but hang in there :)

Hey, all! I am very anxious to hear back from Yale. I applied to Penn, Case Western Reserve, Emory, Yale, and University of Southern Maine. I had an interview at Case last week and I got my acceptance letter yesterday :) Yale is my dream school, though. I'm so excited to hear back. I have a 3.81 GPA in psychology, I'm in the Honors Program, 150/154/5.5 on the GRE (not as well as I wanted to, but oh well), I studied abroad at a nursing school, and designed an intervention for an inpatient psych unit at CS Mott Children's Hospital. I also teach anatomy. I am really hoping I have a good chance of getting in, but I have a terrible inferiority complex and I always feel like I'm not good enough. Hahaha. I applied to the PMHNP specialty.

Where else are y'all applying? What are your thoughts on Yale's program? I love the focus on healthcare for all. I wrote about that in my essay.

Current GEPNs: What is the cost of attendance at Yale? What is it like living in CT? Any answers/advice/good thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated :)

Good luck to all of you!

Kate
