University of Miami Accelerated BSN spring 2015

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello everyone, I just wanted to start this thread for anyone interesting or planning on applying to UM for spring 2015. I am finishing up the pre-requisites I need...doing micro class and lab. So far those are the only things I know I have to take. I'm extremely nervous, mainly because of the waiting game to see if I'm accepted or not.

I had to take over class, so I am not too happy about that either, so that also makes me a little down.

Also when I called the other day, someone said they are changing the application process, did anyone else hear that information?

Are you guys finish with all your pre-requisites?

Do you know how much repeating a class puts you in the hole for not getting accepted?

Hi fitchickadee, I am glad I found your thread because I too am planning on applying for Spring 2015 and it is definitely nerve wracking. I actually did not hear about the application process changing so thanks for the heads up. Were they able to elaborate on how or what would be changing in the process? I too am finishing up my last pre-req, microbiology, and possibly human anatomy. I am not sure if the they are changing the guidelines for pre-reqs but I was always told that the policy was that you were allowed to repeat one failed nursing pre-req, which would be a grade of C- or lower so it sounds like that may not be a problem. I was also a little concerned about my anatomy pre-req because the schools in my area only offer anatomy and physiology I and II together and I was told that will only fulfill the physiology course requirement and I will need to take anatomy again. Does anyone know if that is accurate or will they accept my credits for both classes?

Hey Gabeyta, the lady told me that they might be changing the system for the application process. she didn't mention anything about changing requirements etc. I don't think that is true because it wasn't updated online. It's a little confusing because every time I call I feel like I am getting different answers for the same question. I graduated from UM a few years ago... I called and someone said I should fill out the readmission application and I called a second time someone said the transfer application which is right (online it says do the transfer application). I've heard some students say that about the anatomy and physiology class also but I have no idea, I say call them and ask (call multiple times, different day lol). I'm a former graduate of UM and they have all my info and couldn't evaluate my transcript (or let me meet with an advisor) to tell me if I am missing anything else (which is really annoying); I was told I would have to wait apply and then they will let me know. They have these info sessions, I signed up to go to one next month. I didn't do Micro, so that's the only class I knew for sure I had to do.

Hi, I applied in April and the process took about three weeks or so before my file was complete. I had to call several times and send emails back and forth. Filling out the common application had a lot of information that wasn’t relevant as I already have college degrees. But even though the process was a little time consuming everybody I spoke to was friendly and helpful. In May, I was told my application was complete and that I would know in October or November if I made it or not. The wait is the worst part I guess. Especially, as I declined the Nursing program at Miami-Dade as I rather go to UM. I hope I made the right choice! I did get accepted at Nova as well, but it is a 27 month program and UM with 12 months….. The wait is killing me. Yes, they will not evaluate transcripts until after you apply. Thankfully, I did have every class needed. I did take Micro with lab and Ana 1 and 2 etc. I didn’t hear anything about the process changing but they did have a lot of additional questions after I filed my application. One of them was what am I doing until January. Good luck!

Don't know about repeating a class and if it makes a difference or not. As long as you did better the second time I don't think it is a big deal. If you took ana 1 and 2 together as long as you got double credit then it should not be a problem, I think.

Hi Everyone,

I am interested in applying for spring 2015. I have two or three more pre-reqs to complete. Does anyone know why "general psychology" is a clinical pre-req under the traditional BSN and not under the Accelerated BSN? I provided the link so you guys could take a look. I have contacted the SON via phone and email. They did not provide me with a clear answer. I do not want to waste money on a class I do not need. By the way has anyone signed up for any of the info sessions?

Thank you,

Hi cleolml! thanks for posting with your info on your applying experience. Yes I have to say the waiting is killing me too!! I definitely prefer UM over MDC (even though I will still applying there) so I'm crossing my fingers. Oh by the way MDC is no longer taking the test as part of their admission (thank god I didn't start studying for it).

If you don't mind me asking what you had your previous degree in?

Hi myabloom, I am not sure why that is so. I think you should call again and see if someone else can answer that question. Also ask and see if they will accept the psychology class you did....never hurt to ask.

They are no longer requiring the test but MDC is offering an Associates degree in nursing in there accelerated program whereas UM offers a BSN. Just making sure you guys are aware of the difference in programs :)

Thanks sawa002! So they did change the application process. I applied before this change, so I will just call to make sure everything is set.

Hi, haven’t been on for a while, well I am glad to hear they have changed the application process. It didn’t make sense. I didn’t even have an option for spring 2015. So like I said earlier my application was complete some time ago before the new process, I received a phone call yesterday telling me I never took intro to psychology. I guess they actually didn’t go through my classes until now . So I was told I had to register for that class even though I have several Psy courses and a lot of them in graduate school as I have a Master in management Psychology. Seemed a little ridiculous.

I got accepted to the Miami-Dade nursing program and I left before classes started. I was not too impressed, very disorganized and I know they now no longer require the TEAS. I also got accepted to Nova however the dilemma is Nova is 7 semesters for the BSN. I do not recommend an AA most employers are looking for nurses with a BSN- it is the way to go.
