SBU NURSING APPLICANTS FOR FALL 2017

Hey guys! I've decided to start this thread for all applicants. I know it's a bit early but I'm hoping we can all help each other! Last year I applied for the Basic BSN program and was chosen for an interview. Unfortunately, I wasn't selected for the program. I was accepted to SBU and decided to attend this year and take some classes. I've already received my associate degree in Liberal Arts from NCC. Where is everyone transferring from?

I submitted my app in the beginning of October, for no other reason then to stop obsessing about it. I graduated undergrad with a 3.6 BS and grad school with a 3.9. I have volunteer experience but that's the extent of my field experience. This program is so competitive that I have no idea if I will receive an interview, so we shall see.

Hey everyone! I plan on submitting my application in a couple of days. I'm still waiting for one letter of rec. I applied to the accelerated program but was denied. I have an undergrad degree and a master's degree. I volunteer at MSK and just got a job at SBU Hospital as a CNA. I'm hoping the job offer at their facility gives me a better chance of getting in this time around. Good luck to everyone!! And happy new year!!

Hi everyone! I just submitted my application along with my recommendation letters today! I'm so nervous about getting in that I've been looking at posts from previous years loll. I transferred to SBU in Fall 2016 so right now I have a 3.2 ,meanwhile at my community college I only have a 3.0 :nailbiting: I feel like everyone has such outstanding GPAs and tons of volunteer/patient related experience while mine isn't that much in comparison. Does anyone else wanna post their GPA if you mind?

I feel like everyone is feeling the same way. @jessaying, I totally did the same thing. It only left me more nervous and anxious about my application! Everyone is special in their own way and not having the perfect GPA can cause you to feel inadequate.

I certainly am not the most qualified person for the nursing program. There are so many people who worked as CNAs, EMTs, medical assistants, etc. I have no experience in the nursing field but I do have the passion to pursue one. It just feels like the right career for me.

I did do a lot of volunteering and had leadship positions at my college.

My gpa is a 3.7 and I'm really hoping my essay will show who I am and my desire to become a nurse.

I've volunteered at a hospital back home and now SBU Hospital. Idk if that's much but hopefully they'll think it's okay. I have a leadership position in a club and i'm part of other stuff. Plus I've worked part time as a lab tech.

I hope they like my essay!

I totally agree Sublee. From what I understand, the first part of the application evaluation is your GPA, your essays and your recommendation. They each get points and ur overall grade is used as a basis for if you get an interview. I don't know how they determine points for the essay or recommendations but if your GPA isn't so high but you have an exceptional essay and strong recommendations you could easily have enough points to get you a interview. They don't want only 4.0 students, they want well rounded driving people who will do well in the program and be a great nurse. Then at the interview you take a math test and write a writing sample, and those three things are graded and assigned points. So it seems like as an applicant you have a lot of chances to provide a boost to your application "grade". Before I started applying I felt certain I would get an interview but now I just don't know. There are so many great people I have met that have good GPA's, wonderful personalities and many have a lot of experience (which I assume contributes to their recommendation score). Anyway, I think we all have a chance to get to the interview, then it's really up to what they r looking for personality wise.

Hi, This is my second year applying. My sister is graduating from the program in May. It is CRAZY competitive, and some years harder than others. My GPA is 3.76, all pre-req's done, and I am a Volunteer for my local Fire Department. I am also an EMT. I worked a little harder on my essay, but not sure what else I could possibly do... Good luck to everyone!!!!

Hi.. You do not have to wait for the letters of recommendation before submitting your application. I'd say, submit now, and keep an eye out for the letter to come in.. You'll still have access to them, and can re-send the requests if needed.

Hello!

I'm glad I found this thread. I submitted my application a couple of weeks ago. Stony is the only program I've submitted an app to so I'm really really hoping I get in. I'm currently doing my undergrad at SBU and will graduate w/ my bachelors in the Spring. I didn't apply to the accelerated though just because I don't want to rush through the program and stress myself out more than necessary. For stats, I have a 3.7 overall GPA and about a 3.6 science GPA. I have a couple different volunteering experiences but nothing too related to nursing like CNA.

For those who have already received your solar login, how long after submitting did you receive it?? I'm starting to worry since I've yet to receive mine...

How long after submitting your application did you receive your solar login? I submitted almost 2 weeks ago and still haven't received mine so I'm getting a little nervous:/

I got mine 3 days after submitting but I did that in October so maybe so many applications just got submitted and they are backed up. I would not be nervous, it doesn't mean anything. Just call and see what the story is.

Hey guys! I'm currently a student at SBU in the health science major. I'm glad this thread was started because I'm sure we will all be extremely anxious in these next couple of weeks.

Dani, since you've been through the process already, can you give the rest of us any insight on details (how long until you get invited for an interview after the application process is complete, is the program rolling admissions, what the group interview is like, etc.). Any information you can provide would be much appreciated!
