OCCC Spring 2010 hopefulls!

U.S.A. Oklahoma

Published

I just turned in my 2010 application to OCCC's nursing program and wanted to see who all out there are going to be playing the waiting game with me for the next 2ish months!

Where is everyone getting their vaccines? Or their TB test? We haven't lived in OKC that long and I only have an OB. Any auggestions would be great!

I got my vaccines at the health dept. It was Cleveland County but my hep B was $45 each. I got MMR free (I couldn't find my shot record so I had to get them again). I had my TB test at Norman Regional Hospital. It was $10 for each one (done a week apart). Call your county health dept. for a referral to where you can get the TB test. The TB Control Center only does tests for exposures, not for school. Keep in mind that if you get MMR you have to wait a month for TB testing so do the tests first. The MMRs are done a month apart and 2 are needed. MMR cannot be waived like hep B. I also got my varicella titer at Norman Regional for $36. PM me for contact info if you want to do it there. The nurse who does it at Norman Regional is really nice. I asked her a bunch of questions and she was happy to answer all of them.

Oh, and CONGRATS to all of you who got in! I will be looking forward to meeting you all and getting to know you!

Does any actually know anyone in the program? What do they say about it? Pros and Cons. Do you know anyone who has flunked out or dropped out?

For now,I'm taking A&P I. Still have II, Chem and Micro. I won't even apply until I mid-term with Chem. That is the class I am most afraid of . God be with me, cause I'm so scared.

I have a friend who started this semester (fall 09). I just talked to her today and she told me that the material is very different and the tests are not like the ones we've done so far. It's critical thinking and not memorization. She said that you have to stay on top of your reading (and there's a LOT of it) because if you get behind on that it's very difficult to catch up. Getting in is hard enough so I think if you can do all that, you can get through NS. It just requires diligence and discipline.

Have y'all started turning stuff in yet? I feel like I have not had a break in forever... there is so much to do. I did start getting shots at the end of summer so only one more set to go first part of Feb.

My titers I did at my family doc's office. But they sent me to the health dept. for my Hep.'s and I had to re-do MMR series. TB done.

I got my background check Friday and ordered the second one online.

CPR class 11/21 at MNTC. It's all day but it's really the only time I can do it. I could go to the OCCC one 12/2 but that's cutting it too close.

Anyone start buying stuff yet? What kind of stethoscope are you getting/wanting?

We should meet up for lunch or a coke/coffee on a Friday sometime before 12/4. It might be fun to have a few friends going in. You all might already have friends, but I got in a semester earlier than most of my study partners :(

I have turned in everything except I need to get flu shots and turn that in. I also need to figure out how to change my clinical preferences. I found out that the times I signed up for won't work. I was told that I could change it at orientation but may not wait that long. I took the AHA CPR class (BLS for healthcare providers) last Saturday; it was only 3 hours.

I also bought all my stuff about a month ago since I would need it eventually anyway. I got arm patches and ordered a name tag from the bookstore later week. All I need is some shoes. I wanted to get all my stuff done so I could concentrate on my classes this semester and keep my GPA up.

BTW, it*will*happen, I think you're in my on-campus class. :wink2: PM me if you want. As far as I know, I'm not very familiar with anyone who got in the spring semester. Everyone I knew from my other classes either got in already or disappeared altogether.

I have the CPR class tomorrow at OCCC and have had my first TB test this week. I will get the other next week. By the way, the TB Control Center does do TB tests for work and school and not just for exposure.

Jamie

Jamie,

Doing good! So much to do. I still need to find somewhere for my shots... and get the CPR done. I had class today so couldn't.

Are you taking classes at OCCC now? PM if you'd like to meet up :) I met OKinOKC (Mindy) this week. Even if you have north clinicals and I have south it will be great to have friends in the program. We'll need each other.

Where has Babymademeeatit been?

Sure, I would love to meet up. I am taking 2 classes this semester to finish up another associate degree. I will make contact. If anyone else would like to meet up somewhere, let me know. I agree, it would be nice to have each others support as we move forward.

Jamie

can anyone tell me how many points/gpa they had to get into the program?

Sorry guys, I'm here! It's been a crazy few weeks! I'm pregnant, not due till Dec.23rd, but Dr. put me on bed rest due to hypertension. So, I may be induced this week! We'll see! Anyways, just finished my immunizations and everything for the program. Hopefully I'll make it to Tue so I can turn it all in! Now about that Dec. 11th orientation.....

Aharrris30 - I had a 4.0 GPA and 18 points

I heard that the lowest points turned out to be 16 and that the gpa was 2.8 something.

Jamie

If you will excuse a former OCCC grad (may '09)

I just wanted to say a few things.

The points and GPA accepted is different every semester. It depends on the applicants and what they have. They are looking for a total number of admitting students.

But as for advice for OCCC RN students:

First of all,

You cannot underestimate the power of organization.

NP1 is a whole other world. Sometimes it will feel overwhelming, other times, you may wonder why you are paying to learn such rediculous things. There is a lot of reading. But it isn't like the history or science classes of pre-reqs. You will be expected to learn it yes, but you will need to apply it. SO you have to know WHY you are doing what you are doing.

NP2 is like starting nursing school all over again. It's completely foreign. SO, however you made it through NP1, probably won't make it through NP2. You have to change everything about the way you learn.

ATI sucks. There may be that wonderfully perfect person in your class who scores better than anyone on that test. Screw them. They don't make the perfect nurses just because they pass. And when it comes to NCLEX,.... I, as a 87% student got the same number of questions that the top grade in our class, a 98% student received. 75 questions. You can be a great nurse and a great student or not. You can be a great nurse and a OK student. One does not necessarily reflect the other. Relax. ATI is harder than NCLEX!!

If you don't pass a semester, it is not the end of the road. Just pick yourself up and move on. It will be devestating, but it's still ok. You are still ok.

The professors only go out of their way to help those they think have a chance in being successfull. ANd they can be wrong. But they also can be right. So, take their word with a grain of salt.

Build a support system that can withstand a tital wave.

You will need it. If your husband/wife/spouse is not supportive, you will have a battle in front of you. IF you have to work through school, it will be harder. You will be more tired and there will be less of you to give towards what is at hand. Going to nursing school is a full time job, all by itself.

If you believe in yourself, and if you know you can do this job, then you will make it through and the rewards are just beyond the diploma. Hang in there. Gripe a lot and study like mad. Get some NCLEX books and use practice questions. Use your clinical advisor because that is a priceless resourse and just grow and flourish. You will do well.

You will become our best nurses. Because of your dedication and your ability to overcome hardship in your life. You will have more compassion and more understanding. YOu will be ok. And you will make it all the way.

Take it one day at a time.

Breathe.

And good luck!! (: I believe in each and every single one of you!!

YOu make me proud!!!
