Tri-C Nursing Program-Starting in Fall 2011

U.S.A. Ohio

Published

Hi All,

I was looking for fellow students that will be starting the nursing program in the Fall of 2011. I am excited :yeah:about starting and just looking for others who I might be in class with. If anyone has any information on what the process is like before hand, please let me know.

Thanks in advance :D

I can't believe orientation is Wed. I am excited but nervous at the same time. I've wanted to do this for so long and now it is only a couple months away!

It's exciting to be starting, but orientation is actually pretty freaking boring. Basically they tell you to register for 1300 Lecture and Lab and 1450 Lecture, lab, and clinical. You need to buy the blue tote and the sharps kit ticket from the bookstore. You need to complete a mandatory hour of practice in the lab each week. Other than that it's pretty much a snooze fest.:coollook:

I am excited to get the information to register but I know a lot of the information will be boring. Were you there for the whole three hours? Anything that I should bring besides a notebook and the paperwork that needs to be filled out?

Yeah, we were there for the entire 3 hours. You don't really need anything other than a pen and the slip of paper with your score on it from the NEONI test on the Tri-C Blackboard site if they are still making new students bring that to orientation and a small notebook to write things down if you feel you must. Nothing really important is discussed during orientation most of the information save for scheduling grids is already under files on the group site. There you can find information on the required uniform. Ect. Just FYI. You can wear what ever the hell you want to lecture for the most part. In the lab you need closed toe shoes and the white lab coat. Although, when you are in your scheduled lab class most of the instructors don't care if you wear the coat or not. Mainly you wear the coat when you go to practice. However, if you are coming right from clinical wearing your white scrubs you don't need the coat. For clinical you just wear your white scrubs with the patch. You do not need the lab coat. One good piece of advice DO NOT EVER EVER EVER FORGET YOUR PINK LAB SKILLS CARD that you'll receive on your first day of lab. You will NOT be allowed to test out on that weeks skills and will have to make that test out up the next week along with the new skills. Just stick that pink card in a folder that you ALWAYS leave in your backpack. If it is reasonably close for you I recommend the Parma Health Education Center for your lab practice. For one parking is free, and two oftentimes you can get one on one help from the preceptors and often two on one help if you are the only student in the lab. Oftentimes I was the only person in that lab, granted I did more ********ting around with the preceptors than actual practice at the time, but . . .

Thank you for all the information! I will not forget the pink cards! Is there any books you purchased that you didn't use? Is there any books that were recommended that you wish you would have purchased?

Not really, about the only book I didn't use very much was the Med Math book. The 1450 math is really simple.

Basically you need to know

(Ordered Dose / What you have on hand) * Route (Tablet? mL?)

and for non pump Tube feeds you'll get to this around Week 10 or so of 1450

(Ordered Amount * Calibration factor of tubing) / Time in minutes feeding is to be delivered over = drip rate

Remember that Pumps are ONLY set in hours. If you are to deliver 100 mL over one hour you set the pump at 100 mL also if you are to deliver 50 mL over 30 minutes you set the pump at 100 mL.

Other than some basic conversions like converting lbs to kg and Degrees F to Degrees C the math is pretty basic. Each 1450 exam had about 3 math questions and then 2 of these alternate format questions. Some were put these 5 things in order of importance, others were the dreaded select all that apply type questions.

One book that you'll probably want to pick up for when you are writing care plans for your 1450 clinical is this book http://www.amazon.com/Nursing-Diagnosis-Handbook-Evidence-Based-Planning/dp/0323071503/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1306293980&sr=8-1

Not really sure what exactly you want to know but http://www.tri-c.edu/programs/nursing/Pages/default.aspx is a decent place to start.

Thank you so much! You are so quick with your responses and so informative. I really appreciate it!

Here is some more good advice. For the first 5 or 6 weeks of clinical hit your patients up with wit and charm because you won't know what the hell you are doing and that's all you'll have going for you at that point.:rotfl: At least that's what I did and how I felt.:lol2:

My advice...if you are young enough....and don't already have another bachelor's degree...opt out of doing the actual nursing program at tri-c. Do all your pre-reqs for a BSN and then apply to CSU or KSU or Akron and go straight to the BSN. Akron City hospital (where I recently worked as a nursing assistant) has told me any hospital with magnet status will be hiring BSN new grads over ADN grads. I was passed over to be a nursing student technician there because I am not in a BSN program. The only requirement is completion of the first clinical rotation of nursing school..which I did..but nonetheless the positions were all filled by BSN students from Akron or Kent...which would mean the new grad RN positions will be filled by those students.

Since I am old and I have a BA from OSU, I opted for the ADN. Had I known what I know now, I would have waited a couple of years until my youngest was in kindergarten and completed the accelerated BSN at Kent or Akron.

At minimum, you should consider completing the BSN prereqs at tri-c and then bridge asap to a BSN once you are done with the program.

On the bright side, I am starting a new job at Parma hospital and they still hire ADN grads so I hope to get an RN position after I finish at tri-c....knowing full well that I will need to bridge either to a BSN or an MSN in the future.

If you aren't already signed up for the ADN group forum thru my tri-c space...do so immediately. Many of our classmates that either failed or dropped out are selling their books and uniforms for pennies on the dollar.

Good Luck and welcome to Tri-C nursing!

Those accelerated programs aren't for old people and certainly not for people that have families and or children. Unless you want to have absolutely no life other than nursing and be borderline suicidal for a year and a half accelerated programs aren't for you. It's most cost effective to complete the ADN and whatever other Gen Ed courses at Tri-C then matriculate to Ohio University's RN-BSN program. They actually have an agreement with Tri-C.

http://www.outreach.ohio.edu/onlinecomplete/colleges/Tri-C/landing.htm You're looking at roughly 15k between Tri-C and Ohio University tuition vs a hell of a lot more somewhere else. The OU program is also entirely online. Plus since you'll be an RN you will actually have the option of working as an RN (possibly having the hospital pick up part or all of the cost of the BSN) while completing your BSN. It's not a bad route to go unless you are in a big hurry to find a job. It almost certainly is less stressful however hard that may be to believe.:lol2:
