Nursing Shortage?

U.S.A. Ohio

Published

I have been hearing for years about a nursing shortage in Ohio and across the country. One newspaper (USA Today, I believe) recently ran an article that said something to the effect of "there will never be an unemployed nurse".

I beg to differ. I know way too many LPN's who are new grads and having an extremely hard time getting a job!

The other day on Fox News, I was really surprised to see them use the term "RN shortage" instead of "nursing shortage" I think "RN Shortage" fits better.

I live in Sandusky and we have an oversaturation of LPNs. Currently, we have around 3-4 LPN schools within a 40 miles radius. There are not enough LPN jobs in my area for the number of graduates. It took my husband's cousin seven months to find an LPN job and even then, she could only find part-time. Due to the economy, she was laid off within two months of getting the job. She is currently working in fast food.

I am moving towards the Lima area this late summer. I've talked to several DON's in that area and I am basically hearing the same thing---an oversaturation of LPN schools in that area.

I am curious as to what area members are from and is there an LPN oversaturation where you are at.

What do you think about the term "nursing shortage"?

Where in Ohio can an LPN get a job?

When i started nursing school all I heard was how I was going to have at least three job offers when I graduate. Now, I'm going into my senior year, I have a position as a Nursing Student Technician, and I am still scared I won't get a job. I have accepted the fact that I'm going to have to look outside of Ohio to find something. The techs that just graduated in May are having a hard time. And now, I hear they are not replacing techs. I really can't believe in the "nursing shortage" anymore.

::keeping fingers crossed::

I think there is a shortage of RNs currently employed. After working in the hospital, they could all stand to hire a lot more. There is not a shortage of nurses willing to fill that void, but a shortage of money to pay them.

I graduated in a class of 29 last month. Only 10 of us have jobs so far, myself included thank goodness. There is definitely not a nursing shortage here in SW Ohio!

Hmm,

I think we need to take a step back and see things for what they are. There ARE jobs. No they aren't the flashy ED or CCU positions we all hope for, but LTC, Dr's offices and agencies are ALWAYS hiring (new grad 1/2010). IMHO I feel that new Nursing grads feel entitled, we are in a recession!! Even MD resident programs ect are being cut back. Places are running bare boned, even if they need extra staffing... Network, compromise, grow, adapt and learn. You will get the job you WORKED for. We're in nursing right?? Lets start acting like it:lol2:

P.s.

That may be true in your area, but not all areas. I know people that have graduated and pass the NCLEX and are desperately looking for ANY nursing RN position and aren't having any luck. They are told they aren't hiring or have a crazy amount of applications per position so have the ability to only hire experience nurses. The people I know would be THRILLED to find an RN job in a dr's office or LTC. Better than being unemployed after working your butt off in nursing school!

I'm just down here in Cincy.....

Relocation may have to happen as well, this area is indeed saturated- but not totally impossible

Of course there ARE jobs... there just AREN'T ENOUGH jobs to employ the bulk of new graduates coming out every semester.

There are positions in many institutions, but a lot of those are frozen right now due to budgets. Also, the big 3 in Cleveland are routinely looking for BSN over ADN due to their magnet status which states that they have to have a certain percentage of BSN working to keep magnet. Where I work, just in my unit alone we have 10 open positions, but we are unable to hire in until we get the okay from finance. Sucks. All of our floors are short and we can't fill the positions.

Five years ago, there were pages of facilities and hospitals advertising for LPNs and RNs on the classified boards. Now, not so much. Maybe one page.

I agree with the above posters... its not that the jobs are not there, its that the funding is not there to fill those positions. Medicare/Medicaid cuts started by the wonderful (note the sarcasm) Governor Taft in 2005 have been made worse by the economy. Costs of providing care have gone up while reimbursements have stayed the same (or even reduced in some cases). Facilities have to cut costs somewhere and, unfortunately, staffing is one of the first to be affected.

Meanwhile, any attempt to rationally discuss end-of-life care decision making is met with calls of "death panels."

Im with you there.. Im in Lebanon. I graduated In January of 08 and still haven't found a fulltime job yet. I have applied to every LTC, Hospital and DR office from Dayton to Cincinnati, and all I hear is we don't hire new grads..or you need experience..well how else am I going to get it I they don't hire me?..

I'm back to Cincy State for my RN but now I think I may change my major due to the hearing the difficulty new RNs are having finding jobs.. My brother lives in Indy and say LPN jobs are plentyful..So moving my have to be an option..

It's ok everyone!! I am a recent grad who cannot for the life of me find a job, but yesterday I read an article that fills me with hope! This article said that there will be a national nurse deficit in 10 years, so I will be golden in 2020, woopitydoo! This is frustrating!!!!
