How many hours, back to back, are nurses legally allowed to work in Ohio?

The nursing home I am currently employed at, is working Aides 20 hours and some LPN's and RN's 24 and 25 hours back to back.

I am thinking that this is a DANGEROUS practice.

However, the NH is Union and LPN's have mandatory OT.:down:

But what is the cut off on that?

I do not think the board regulates that. You would think they would, but I know some nurses at my hospital have wanted to pick up OT in another unit, then come work another 12 hour shift in our unit, and my NM will not allow it. She only allows 16-20 hours in a row, and I think she wants 8hours or so in between shifts. I believe it is regulated by our hospital.

SO basically the Nusing Home can keep any of their nurses there indefinatly and still hold the "If you leave its abandonment and you WILL lose your license" card over our heads?

I have never heard of any place being allowed to "keep staff for 24 hours unless it is a declared emergency". I think most facilities can mandate 16 hours with an 8 hour break between the next shift. This abuse needs to be reported to the state and federal labor board, all state agencies dealing with licensing of this facility. It is plain to see that staffing is a safety issue, supervisors to have a responsibility to step in and take some of the load when levels are so dangerous. This place must have a difficult time retaining staff and needs some changes in policy and how to treat staff and patients. Good luck but I think I would be looking for another job, even if it was flipping burgers. What area are you in may I ask?

i am in southern Ohio.

I am off right now due to a herniated disc...don't think i am going back.

Most the nurses are mandated to work doubles 3-4 nights a week...this isn't a good fit for me at all!

I am sorry for your injury. You are too young to have such severe back problems.

It will surely affect your ability to work. Please take care of yourself.

By southern Ohio do you Cincy area or where? I was so interested in looking into employment in Ohio, but situations have gotten in the way for awhile now. I can honestly say that the Columbus area has been down right hostile to me on the phone. I know I speak with an accent, I am born and bred in southern WV and we do speak southern and use some terms that are probably considered old fashioned, but rude is rude no matter where you are.
