Various Antibiotics, such as Ampicillin, Penicillin, Cefotan/Cefotetan, Cleocin, etc.

Calcium Gluconate (reverses Magnesium Sulfate)

Certain narcotics for labor pain relief such as Fentanyl or Stadol

Nubain --for labor pain or itching related to local anesthetics used in epidural/intrathecal/spinal anesthesia.

Various locals, primarily Bupivicaines, for epidural use

Oral meds for postpartum pain, such as Ibuprofen, Toradol, Tylox/Percoset, Tylenol #3, Darvocet, etc.

Now, these are the most common medicines we have used or currently use where I work. This list does NOT include herbals/complimentary therapies used by midwives and other practicioners related to OB/midwifery care, of course.

These medicines are all listed in various drug books if you need to know their specific use(s) in OB.

I would add Stadol in addition to Nubain and Narcan, which has many uses, of course, but we commonly use it for the intense itching related to the Duramorph in the spinal in a post c/s.

Also Demerol and Phenergan. My unit doesn't use Demerol during labor but my previous unit used it alot! We use Stadol, sometimes in combination with Phenergan.

We don't use demerol much at all anymore...seizure thresholds being lowered and all....

and we are rapidly using more anzemet and zofran as well as reglan instead of phenergan for nausea.
