New Grad hoping to start out in Women's health field

How difficult is it to find a LD, PP, mother-baby job right now as a new grad? I will be finishing my BSN next year or the year after at the latest, and I will start an MSN program right after. I want to work during my NP program, but really only want to work in OB (in any of the areas mentioned above)---possibly to parlay that later in a women's health NP job (I will be going for an FNP). But I love the idea of working as an RN in women's health (hands on care as well as the educational part), and want to know how realistic it is to expect that job to be around when I graduate.

Of the three, which is the easiest to break into as a new grad?

I plan on doing my senior practicum in this area (likely LD). I know its probably area specific but a general idea would be a good place to start :) Thanks!

It may be difficult but I believe anything is possible. I have ADN and will be interviewing for a PP position next week as a new grad.

I recently got a new grad position on a perinatal unit. They hired 5 new grads to the unit. They said they picked us five because they could see and feel our passion for the population and they knew it would be something we would take seriously and stick with. So it is definitely possible and always let your passion shine through!

did you do your senior practicum in this field? Is that a good idea to help? Congrats to both of you! I'm very excited to read this :)

RNnic42: What will be your responsibilities as a perintal RN?

I did my preceptorship in the NICU and some of the other new hires worked in a birthing center during and after school. Perinatal nursing encompasses L&D, antepartum, postpartum and newborn nursery. I rotate to all units. I get to experience a lot and I LOVE it. Good luck to you!

That sounds absolutely divine! Best of luck to you too!

I am so glad to hear the responses as well. I am a senior BSN student and hope to get into to this area as well. I know it may be hard especially because I really hope to be in LD but I would take any position in any area.

...Its so nice to see the word "passion" when it comes to the love of nursing, as it relates to the position you are going after, vs the job as just a "stair stepper" to get you to the level one is seeking for educational gain only. I hear it time and time again. Getting the BSN, however have not even been accepted into a program...then on to get an MSN.....just to get into a NP program. Really at all cost to avoid any hands on clinical.

I'm a Mother Baby new grad nurse and I absolutely love it. I've worked there for years as a tech but am finally at my dream. People still ask me if I chose this or just am working there because it's a job and I still want to smack them every time they say something like that. Mother Baby RN is my dream job and I couldn't be happier. Good luck to you!! :)
