I haven't been to any deliveries in a few months, but generally our NICU team is called to all mec, forcepts, vacuum, decel, no PNC type dealies. I've heard many a screamer and many a thing screamed, but I guess I forgot.

Went to one today,( a walk in, no PNC,thick mec ) who was screaming at the top of her lungs, climbing the bed, pushing away the OB.

I wanted to slap her! I watched as the nurse taked her down enough for a few more pushes to get the kid out. (cry at perinium, pink and active but very FLK.Genetic issues? Still went to nursery).

I went back to my unit wondering how you guys can put up with that on a daily basis. I would lose my mind. You really have to have nerves of steel! Hat's off!

I get a kick out of a real primal scream. I wish I was allowed to scream that way on occasion, but I don't have an excuse.

TY for the kind words. I live for "tough" cases, although this type, I can do without. I hate seeing anyone go without prenatal care---for their safety and the wellbeing of the unborn baby. It's just sad. But I will take a good screamer anytime----natural labor is truly amazing, screams and all. I have had more than a few tough cases like this----one kicked the dr off his stool, delivering her 7th baby! He tossed down his gown and walked out-----she said, "where are you going?" And he basically told her, he will not take abuse and when she was ready to settle down and have her baby, he was ready to help. That shut her up, FAST. We see all kinds.....

Hopefully that baby is ok------and the FLK thing is no more than an FLK, not a truly deep problem.

The screaming doesn't bother me at all, other than seeing that the mother is exhausting herself. I do draw the line at hitting and kicking. Have only had to do the "everyone step away" thing a couple of times. Usually a firm voice and reminding her that this will go on MUCH longer if she doesn't direct the energy toward delivery does the trick. (I've been told I have the "Mom" voice that makes people pay attention - works with drunks and psych pts. too)

The cursing can be amusing at times when girls get creative. I'm never sure what some of the non english speakers are saying, but know when the cursing starts as that's when the sister-in-law quits translating!
