If a baby was born with CRS (congential rubella syndrome) would the baby be placed in isolation or allowed to room in with the mother?

My OB book didn't say much about it, except that these babies shed the virus in secretions for up to 1 year.

Thanks Seren

I have not had any experience with this, but I would assume (since the baby could shed the virus to all contacts) that the baby would be placed in isolation. It is also important that all medical personnel be rubella immune to avoid further transmission of the disease to others.

No personal experience here, but I would bet contact/ isolation precautions would be in order. This is a good one to ask in the NICU forum. I bet someone like Fergus, who is a NICU nurse, can answer this one better for you. Sorry I am not much help.

I am not a L&D nurse but.......if mom is immune...I would think that promoting the bond is more important. Mom is going to be exposed on d/c anyways. If mom not immune, I would think that immunization would be in order for her and the rest of the family!

Thanks everyone.
