How many RNs in a delivery?

Can you tell me how many RNs you have in a delivery? How many in a c-section?

I'm a new RN working L & D. The experienced RNs are expected to handle SVDs alone - with a CNM or MD, of course. (Respitory comes in if there is meconium, the neonatologist if there are any complications.)In a c-section, there is only one RN to circulate and care for baby. (Respitory comes in for all sections.) We have been assured that we won't have to manage a delivery alone for at least a year, and that we can always get extra help by calling out to the desk. I was just wondering about the norm for other hospitals.

Thanks!

If the doc isn't going to make it and I know that then I try to have THREE nurses in the room LOL... More hands to "catch" hehe.

Forgive my ignorance (UK nurse here). Do American RNs deliver babies?

To work in a labour ward over here you have to be a Registered Midwife and you would look after the labouring mum and of course deliver her if she went on to have a lady partsl delivery.

Just curious.

American RN's work in L&D and manage the entire labor (with doctor's orders) but the doctor does the actual delivery unless like steph said the baby chooses otherwise. We have one RN for a section to receive the baby. There are RN's in the surgical team but I'm not counting them. One RN for a lady partsl delivery and at the time of delivery another RN or LPN to receive the baby.

We have 2 NRP trained nurses in the room for lady partsl deliveries.

One baby nurse + respiratory for planned c/s; baby nurse + pedi for unplanned section (plus OR crew - circulator, etc.).

We have a second NRP qualified RN present at all lady partsl deliveries. Most times she will stay for weights and measures and do eyes and thighs. I send her out as soon as we know the babe is OK because I prefer to leave baby skin to skin and delay eyes and thighs until after it has nursed.

In a section, which is done in the OR by the OR crew, we send a nurse for the baby and an RT also comes to the delivery.

New York State and NRP require one RN for Mom and one RN for each baby. Now reality... it depends on our census. We ry to send anRN for baby but that doesn't always happen. For sections OR srubs and circulates and an OB RN is there for the baby.

They think they (admin) will train all of the OB staff to scrub and circuate but that should be tricky cuz we staff only 3 nurses per shift. Hmm let's do the math. 1 scrub, one circulate, one for baby... that leave hmm ZERO for the other mothers and babies on the floor. Let's see them get that trough risk managment!!
